From: actingman@i... Date: Tue May 2, 2000 2:12 pm Subject: Length of time. This is kind of a test message based on what Don wrote to me below. There were times before the merge when Egroups would sometimes delay in sending out the message. For those who don't know, Egroups, which is the original host of this Search list, merged with Onlist, another service for mailing lists. There are some changes. I subscribed to several Onlist groups, and the one good thing is now they are all available on one site when I log in. The one change I like to remind people about is there is a content filter. They don't tell you about it, and it is automatically set to "on." You can go to your main page on egroups and turn it off if you wish. Original message: Since they've changed the Mailing list, is it me or does it take longer to get things posted? Was wondering if you noticed? What do you think of the changes? I'm not sure whether the changes are all that wonderful--I had just gotten used to the way it was! :) From: actingman@i... Date: Tue May 2, 2000 2:32 pm Subject: OT: Gerry Anderson Merchandise Below is a message from the Space:1999 mailing list for any Gerry Anderson fans. I have participated in these group buys with complete satisfaction. Anthony is doing us a huge favor here. You have to pay a membership fee to be allowed to buy the Fanderson merchandise (has to do with licensing restrictions.) Fortunately, Fanderson is allowed, or simply closes an eye to the multiple purchases...which makes it possible for them to produce the great stuff they do. Fanderson covers the shows Gerry Anderson produced (Space:1999, UFO, the various 60's supermarionation shows, etc.) They produced soundtrack cds for each season of Space:1999 that were spectacular, and I also highly recommend the seperate documentaries on the making of 1999, and on UFO. Here is the link for the Fanderson site, and you can check out what they have: http://www.kikgraphics.demon.co.uk/fanderson.html John ORIGINAL MESSAGE: Hi all, It's time to do another Fanderson run! This allows you to buy your favorite Fanderson merchandise thru me. This merchandise run is open to US/Canadian residents only at this time. When sending in your order, please be sure to include your FULL NAME and ADDRESS! Please - I can NOT keep tracking people down for names, addresses, etc. Include it the FIRST time! Payment is due by May 12 - again, please adhere to this deadline - I am not waiting since I will probably do another run in June. If you miss this run, then your order will go in the June cycle. If you have any questions, please let me know. Anthony Anthony DiPietro From: Jim Alexander Date: Thu May 4, 2000 1:08 am Subject: TEST MESSAGE Sorry for the waste of time. Jim Alexander here, back from a brief (surprise) hiatus from the list. I just wanted to see if I entered the eGroups address correctly in my Address Book. Thanks for your patience and understanding... :) Jim probecontrol@d... From: actingman@i... Date: Thu May 4, 2000 1:36 pm Subject: Try this again. With many thanks to Jim, and indirectly from Don, I checked the settings for this mailing list, and found that Egroups had us catagorized in the Arts catagory under "M". If I did it right, then we should be under Arts>Television>Programs>S If I did it right of course. Maybe we got assigned to "M" for "Medical instruments to Probe with." From: dghprobe3@a... Date: Fri May 5, 2000 2:36 am Subject: Leslie Stevens, Orson Welles, Burgess Meredith As usual, I was checking on some other things and found the following on "The Outer Limits" Egroups Mailing List. This item concerns Leslie Stevens' association with Orson Welles and Burgess Meredith: >"In 1939, at the age of 15, Leslie Stevens participated in a writing contest sponsored >by Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre and he won. > >The name of his play was: 'The Mechanical Rat': a proto-science fiction story with >robots! > >Then, he went on tour with Welles' team as a gofer, extra, stand-in and assistant to >lighting. Among the Mercury Theatre people there were Burgess Meredith and >Agnes Moorehead." Steven's connection to Burgess Meredith apparently goes WAY back! As Johnny Carson would say, "I did not know that!" Can anyone find a copy of "The Mechanical Rat" by Leslie Stevens? Sounds like the basis for "The Outer Limits" started quite early! The address for the above quote is: http://www.egroups.com/message/the_outer_limits_1960s/121? Some of the above information is verifiable at MGM's Page devoted to "The Outer Limits": http://www.theouterlimits.com/episodes/season_old_1960s/index.html Other documentation of aspects of the above can be found at: http://www.towson.edu/~flynn/tol.html Burgess Meredith's association with Orson Welles can be confirmed at: http://www.otrsite.com/logs/special/Orsonwel.htm When you get to this page, use your "Find" or "Find in Top Window" command, put in the name 'Burgess Meredith' and the productions he did for and with Orson Welles will appear. Apparently, recordings of some or all of these old radio shows can be obtained through this site. Don dghprobe3@a... From: dghprobe3@a... Date: Mon May 15, 2000 4:24 am Subject: SEARCH fans & Mannix fans--similar problems As usual, I was doing some checking on other things and found a couple of items that some in the SEARCH Mailing List may find interesting. It appears that "Mannix" fans have some of the same problems we do! Although it has aired on cable, a large number of episodes apparently are not run. So, "Mannix" fans are looking for those missing episodes. (Sound familiar?) They apparently found two "Mannix" episodes from Japan! (Sounds VERY familiar.) Columbia House has been mentioned previously in this mailing list as a possibility for carrying SEARCH. The "Mannix" fans have tried to persuade Columbia House to carry "Mannix" videos, but with no success so far. They point out that Columbia House HAS carried "Mission Impossible" episodes, but that was probably also due to the interest generated by the Tom Cruise movie version of a few years ago. So we SEARCH fans shouldn't feel alone. Fans of other shows are going through similiar trials and tribulations. The webpage pertaining to the above is: http://members.aol.com/anthel/mnxqa.html The above page also contains an email link to Columbia House Videos. It is: vl_customer_service@c... The site also has a list of "Mannix" guest stars. As you scroll down this list, you will find a number of SEARCH guest stars as well. Date: Tue May 16, 2000 9:26 pm Subject: Search logos Thanks to Don's collection, I just discovered something...that was right in front of me. Don has a real film clip of the Search logo (on the globes). The blue one is on top of the red one. I looked at the logo on the novel, and the red globe is on top of the blue one. So I pulled out one episode at random (Let Us Prey) and found they did the following: When they returned to the show from a break (starting an act) the red was on top (as it flew out at us.) When they ended an act, and went to commercial, the blue globe was on top as it flew from us. For the first station break jingle, the blue was on top. For the second station break jingle the red was on top. And for the closing credits, the red was on top. It never would have occurred to me to look for something like that. Of course now we will have to re-watch all of the episodes to see if it was consistent throughout the series. From: dghprobe3@a... Date: Thu May 18, 2000 3:54 am Subject: SEARCH Necrology Update Sad to report the passing of another SEARCH guest star. This time it's actor Craig Stevens who appeared in the title role of the episode "The Clayton Lewis Document." Time magazine of 22 May has a small article with a photo on page 33. They report that he was born Gail Shikles, Jr. He was famous prior to SEARCH for his starring role in the Blake Edward's private-eye series "Peter Gunn." The following snip is from Army Archerd's column in Variety (11 May 2000): "I WAS SORRY TO LEARN OF THE DEATH Wednesday of Craig Stevens, 81, who died of cancer at Cedars-Sinai. The tall, handsome Stevens had been a star of all showbiz media, from B'way to Hollywood, large and small screens ("Peter Gunn"). He was a constant supporter of the biz and was ever-present at all the openings with his wife of 49 years, Alexis Smith, with whom he had costarred on screen as well as on stage. And after she died, Craig and Frances Bergen, longtime family friends (she, the widow of Edgar Bergen) became a regular duo for the past eight years, continuing the tradition of their respective families. He will be missed by all of showbiz..." The link for the above is: http://www.variety.com/archerd/index.asp Be aware that this link won't last long. Also, I had some difficulty logging onto it. The connection kept timing out. But after about five or six tries, it came through. From: dghprobe3@a... Date: Wed May 24, 2000 12:39 am Subject: SEARCH Necrology - Sir John Gielgud SEARCH Necrology Update Again, sad to report so soon the passing of another notable SEARCH guest star. Sir John Gielgud (Harold Streeter of "Probe") died Sunday 21 May 2000 at his home near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, west of London. Gielgud was the last of a trio of actor-knights who dominated the 20th Century British stage. The other two were Sir Laurence Olivier and Ralph Richardson. Gielgud's Hamlet was considered the finest of the age. He won an Academy Award for his role as the English butler Hobson in "Arthur" opposite Dudley Moore. Gielgud noted that he continued to receive fan mail for "Arthur" long after the movie had been released. Ironically he almost turned the role down. Gielgud was born on 14 April 1904 in London, the third of four children. He wrote a 1979 memoir called "An Actor and His Time." Gielgud's role in the "Probe" pilot movie has been discussed recently in this mailing list. A few weeks ago, I rented a movie I hadn't seen in a long time called "The Formula" with George C. Scott. Gielgud appears in that movie as an ex-Nazi also. However, he was a good bit nastier in "The Formula" than he was in "Probe." SEARCH Mailing List members might see if they can find "The Formula" and give it a look-see. Be aware that "Formula" has rough language and some violence. It's not a movie for children.
