When you click on http://www.egroups.com/polls/probe_control you should see an eGroups page that is more or less headed "probe_control: Polls." Look down the page a little and you will see the question "Of the shows we currently have available on video, which is your favorite SEARCH episode?" Click on the question and it will lead you to another page. A checklist of sorts will appear. Find your favorite episode listed and click on it's box. Scroll down a bit until you see the "Vote" box. Click on that and your vote will be tallied. If none of this sounds familiar, let me know what shows up instead when you click the link. If others are having this problem, that could explain why only a couple of votes have been registered so far. We want all the votes to count with no dimpled chads or anything else. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks again, Chris. Don H. From: DBoysen@a... Thanks Anthony From: "Don Harden" Date: Sat Dec 9, 2000 4:07 am Subject: Random thoughts on "One of Our Probes Is Missing" Random Thoughts on "One of Our Probes is Missing" by Don Harden (We don't have this episode on video yet, so this is my take on the audio CD I made of it. I'm sure I missed some things here and there, so anyone who wishes to take shots at this review may do so.) This episode was Tony Franciosa's first appearance as Probe agent Nick Bianco. A few years after "Search" ended in 1973, Atlanta's Channel 5 reran episodes of "The Name of the Game" series of the late 1960's on weekends. Some of these starred Tony Franciosa as a character named Jeff Dillon, but he played that role similar to the way he played Nick Bianco. He was a street-smart cop, knowledgeable about the mafia and such, just like on "Search." He would even use a coin or a watch as a prop and flip it in the air while talking in both series. (In his last episode, "Countdown to Panic," Hugh O'Brian could be seen flipping a coin in the air while running from his car, similar to Bianco.) In this episode, Bianco is on the trail of a fellow PROBE agent (Arthur Burrell, who appeared in "The Gold Machine") who was investigating a counterfeiting operation in which perfect duplicates of $100 bills are being produced. The night NBC reran this (on 12-27- 72), I remembered that my Dad had trouble with the "perfect counterfeits" scenario. It is presented dramatically, but Dad immediately didn't buy it. I didn't know what to think. It sounded impressive to me. The idea of the episode was that certain people in charge of waste disposal hung around the mint and worked out a way to steal the printing plates. On one occasion, a set of plates broke and a metallurgist who was part of the gang got hold of them and microwelded them back together again. Whether that could "really" happen or not, I'm not sure. Also, for the scheme to work, they would also have needed to steal the special paper the bills are printed on. This was not dealt with in the episode, yet the "experts" presented all said that the dupes were "perfect." I wonder if any Treasury Dept. employees were watching this and were either laughing or getting mad as allgetout at what they were watching? In any event, the bad guys get tracked to London and are discovered through a crazy fortune teller. However, these counterfeiters turn out to be a couple of inept bumblers who talk too much. Were we wrong to expect some criminal masterminds behind this plot? This idea is still similar to the pilot and the first episode, in that the bad guy is not quite what you expect. However, in this case, the pattern is reversed. We're expecting some criminal genius kingpins behind this caper, and it turns out to be a couple of somewhat dense folks in a comedy of errors. It does make for a nice "change of pace" episode. The fact that "Search" is set in the present (1972, that is) is borne out in one scene. Franciosa mentions something about needing a high security clearance. To which the lovely Stephanie Powers replied, "that's got to be Henry Kissinger," who was President Nixon's National Security Advisor at the time. Early in the episode, just before Bianco heads to Probe Control, he mentions to his soon-to-be roughed up bartender "buddy" that they are in New York City. I noticed also that Dr. Barnett appeared in Probe Control with Cameron as opposed to simply appearing on the Probe viewscreen. This episode also established Bianco as a rather hot-tempered Latin guy who generally barges into scenes wanting to fight someone. My favorite line in this episode is Cameron's: "You really pick 'em, Bianco!" (Anyone on the SEARCH Mailing List who wants a copy of the audio CD we have of this episode can contact me (dghprobe3@a...) or John (actingman) and we can tell you how to get it. Thanks and take care.) From: Jim Alexander Date: Sun Dec 10, 2000 3:53 pm Subject: "Search" on VHS > >... Best, Mark From: "Don Harden" Date: Sun Dec 24, 2000 6:01 am Subject: Random Thoughts on "Moonrock" Random Thoughts on "Moonrock" by Don Harden (Since we don't have this episode on video yet, I thought I would do a review of the audio CD I made of the 1973 NBC rerun. Anyone who wishes to take shots at this review may do so.) This was Hugh O'Brian's third episode as Lockwood (the second being "The Gold Machine"). Though the series format refers to Lockwood as a former astronaut, not much is made of this despite the fact that the episode focuses on a missing moonrock, which turns out to be a large diamond. I always felt that this episode was more of what "Search" should have been about. Moon landings were still in the news at the time, and the high tech references to the space program were welcome. This also may have been Leslie Stevens' nod to O'Brian's real life interest in NASA and telemetry (this was mentioned in the November 1972 TV Guide article). Real NASA scientists would probably chuckle, however, at the idea of a moon "diamond." Cameron makes reference to the fact that Gloria Harding is out with a cold and that her replacement at medical telemetry is her cousin, Ann Mulligan (played by Ann Prentiss with somewhat of a Texas- sounding twang). This was the last reference to Miss Harding for the rest of the series. I notice that the bad guy in this episode turns out to be an Arab "student from Mesopotamia." It sort of predicted the trouble we had with Iranian students and terrorists in the late 1970's to date, doesn't it? This Arab student, Abbas Mirzah, stole the moon diamond with the idea of helping his brother use it as a tool of political power. We are told that they were planning a coup against the current government of their country. Anyway, Lockwood blows up the bad guys with their own explosives and escapes with the girl (JoAnn Pflug, who later appeared in "The Night Strangler"). Previous posts have mentioned Lockwood's clever use of morse code after his scanner was pilfered by Abbas. I don't think any other episode used this idea again. I wonder if airline people laughed when they saw Lockwood successfully chartering a 747 for only two people. "Crank it up and let's get airborne," barked the former drill instructor. World Securities Corporation evidently has deeper pockets than some eBay bidders. (Sorry, I couldn't resist that one. Just wanted to see if you folks were still paying attention.) While the plane is in flight, Lockwood and Trapnell get to dance while a live band onboard plays a piano version of Dominic Frontiere's SEARCH theme. Only in America. When you read over the Leslie Stevens script John posted of this episode at: http://probecontrol.com/Scripts/Moonrock.txt you will see lines and parts of scenes cut here and there. However, we have some of these scenes in the filmclip scans we posted of this episode at: http://probecontrol.com/Episodes/moonrock1.html We have Act 1 scenes of Griffin talking and joking with Lockwood in Probe Control. The scene between Lockwood, Trapnell and Dr. Van Owen runs a good bit longer in the script than in the aired version. We also have scenes showing part of the picnic had by Lockwood and Trapnell. The Lincoln Enterprises postcard we have posted of Lockwood is apparently from this episode as well. Lockwood wears the same bright silver-looking tie in the other Probe Control filmclips we have of this episode: http://probecontrol.com/Publicity/images/Lockwood.jpg My favorite line is this episode is Griffin's. There is a scene in which a couple of Colonel Mirzah's troops are overheard on the stolen scanner speaking in a different language. Griffin translates: "You won't have to go through customs, those troops are against us. To which the reply was a nasty swear word!" (You had to be there, I guess.) The irony at the end of the episode is that the supposedly super valuable moonrock turned out to be nothing more than busted up rotten glass. "God bless it," Lockwood said as he had the plane steered to Acapulco, much to Cameron's anger. This was probably the most borderline sci-fi episode they ever did, and it was not a bad episode at all, just straightforward action with no clues to puzzle over, not unlike "Wild Wild West" or "The Six Million Dollar Man." Robert Weverka wrote a novelization of this episode which was released in paperback about a year after his first SEARCH book based on the "Probe" pilot. Both of these books show up from time to time on eBay and second-hand book stores. It's a shame that the other SEARCH stories were not adapted to print like James Blish did with "Star Trek." Whoever wants to get a copy of the audio CD we have of this episode should get in touch with me at dghprobe3@a... or John at actingman@i... It has a really nice sound and can be enjoyed like an audio book. Thanks and take care. From: "Mark Speck" Date: Mon Dec 25, 2000 6:24 am Subject: Happy Holidays! Hey Guys! Somehow I felt the response would have been better. The poll ends in a few days and the results will be sent to everyone on Monday, Jan. 1, 2001. Below is a repeat of the earlier post. You can still cast your vote by clicking on the link below. (If you have trouble casting your vote, read the addenda underneath the link for more details.) Just had an ideal after the final votes are in for the favorite episodes. What does anyone think about voting for our favorite Probe agent. What do you guys think? One question, would we include Probe agents such as "the Fantastic Four" :David Pellem, Andre Gerard, Burnside, and deceased F.J. O'Conner , in "Operation Iceman", unlucky Howard Baker (Goddess of Destruction), poor Arnold Hiller (Short Circuit) and abused Ed Bain in "24 Carat Hit". Oh yeah , Lockwood, Bianco, and Grover would be on the list also (LOL). Did I miss anybody? I cannot do it without more consideration. Regarding old Probe agents, which one did Edward Mulhare play? He was an agent gone rogue in a Tony Franciosa episode if I recall. ----- Original Message ----- From: dmanmetz@aol.com To: probe_control@egroups.com Sent: Friday, December 29, 2000 10:22 AM Subject: Re: [probe_control] SEARCH favorite episode poll ends by Jan 1 2001 Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. He was Bianco's mentor when he first joined Probe. In my opinion, Operation Iceman was an above average episode for Search and maybe the best of the Bianco adventures. I enjoyed this one very much. Chris From: "Don Harden" Date: Sat Dec 30, 2000 1:58 am Subject: on future SEARCH polls Hi gang, Don again. Thanks to Chris and Bob for their interesting posts regarding future polls for the SEARCH Mailing List. When the favorite episode poll ends, I'll post another poll for the favorite Probe agent among Lockwood, Bianco and Grover. It might be fun to run a separate poll for the favorite Probe agent "guest star(s) of the week" at the same time. I noticed that the life expectancy of a guest Probe agent was often similar to that of any new red-shirted security guard on classic Trek: kinda nil. Thanks to Chris for that suggestion and many thanks to all who have taken part in the first poll so far. I try to find whatever ways as I can to involve more members in the discussions and activities and the polls seem to be a fun way to go. Here's hoping that 2001 will be a terrific year which will be pleasant and prosperous for all of us. Take care. ============================================== --- In probe_control@egroups.com, dmanmetz@a... wrote: > Edward Mullhare, best known for the TV series "The Ghost and Mrs. Murr" > and "Knight Rider" played David Pellem in "Operation Iceman"... I've been off-line for a while – I'm on the new PC I received for Christmas. I don't have access to all the episodes available, but from what I've seen I'd have to vote for the pilot, "Probe", as my favorite episode. Technically speaking, it isn't by standard of it's length purely an episode, but I guess that's permitted! First off, Lockwood is my favorite `probe'. I thought Hugh O'Brian's somewhat diffident personality struck just the right tone, and that the interplay between he & Burgess Meredith was just about flawless. The plot was straight forward, a quest, which is what a good `Search' episode should be, and the "guest cast", especially John Geilgud, was superb. Angel Thompkins was catty, funny and sexy, and was still managed to come across as competent. What a trick! It's a testament to how much she added to the series, and to what a shame it was that he character was discontinued. The production values were definitely higher than the average 70's "TV Movie" – the show looked great. The constant movement & European locales gave the whole enterprise an international flavor not unlike a James Bond movie. I loved the shots of the jets taking off! It hearkens back to a simpler time when jet travel was considered exotic! The music was great. If you'd like to hear another fantastic Dominic Frontier score, rent 1980's `The Stunt Man' with Peter O'Toole. Aside from the music, it's just a terrific movie. The fight scenes were nicely done – O'Brian threw the best non-karate kick in the business! Anyway, it all comes together as a very satisfying viewing experience. Everyone, you only have one more day to vote – make your votes count! Hi gang: Don here and I ran across this item while looking for something else. The article says this device has existed (at least publicly) for the past two years. "Mega Trans Package," anyone? ==================================================== http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2000/12/28/161114.shtml E-Bomb Disrupts Electronics NewsMax.com Wires Friday, Dec. 29, 2000 LONDON (UPI) - British scientists have developed a nonexplosive artillery shell that can put out such a powerful burst of radio- frequency energy it will destroy or disable electrical and electronic systems for miles around without killing anyone. The new so-called E-Bomb was developed privately by Matra BAe Dynamics and fits into U.S. research efforts into matching and countering similar Russian systems, whose advanced development startled Western intelligence officials when it was revealed two years ago. Particularly worrying to British intelligence officials were reports that the IRA has discussed using a version of the Russian bomb that can be carried in a briefcase. The target, according to the London Daily Telegraph on Wednesday, was the City of London. A meltdown of unprotected computer electronics in the heart of one of the world's primary financial centers is one of Britain's worst nightmares. But almost equally alluring to British Ministry of Defense officials was the prospect of using such a weapon themselves. Last summer they issued a summary of requirements to companies for "radio frequency munitions delivered by 155mm shell or rocket," without saying what they would use it for. U.S. cruise missiles and bombs are believed to be earmarked for similar radio frequency devices, but this is the first time one has been designed for close-in artillery systems that are cheaper and less easily shot down. "It's being looked at for peacekeeping operations, perhaps for hostage situations where you want to knock out someone's mobile phones, computers, electronic security devices and so on," said a BAe Systems spokesman Thursday. The company's work on the system won the scientists a gold award for innovation from the BAe Systems chairman. The E-Bomb works by being fired from a long-range 155mm artillery gun or MLRS rocket launcher and then breaking open its outer casing over the target. The shell or rocket then unfolds its radio transmitter aerials and the transmitter sends a high-powered radio pulse of billions of watts that lasts just a few nanoseconds. Just how effective it would be against a modern military force remains uncertain, however. British, American and other NATO equipment is significantly "ruggedized," encased in extra layers of protective materials compared to that of off-the-shelf commercial electronics. The result of an E-blast could be, therefore, that the enemy military has the only functioning communication systems while the civilian infrastructure, including power plants, manufacturing, hospitals and transportation, stops working. NATO's military has been hardening its electronic systems for many years, primarily as a defense against nuclear warfare. It has long been known that the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) of a nuclear blast severely damages electronic equipment. Up to now, however, EMP has only been considered a peripheral concern of the far more devastating consequences of nuclear war, not as a weapon on its own. "The theory and strategy of active electronic warfare in non-nuclear situations has still to be determined," said one senior British officer. "We are still sorting out some of the lessons of the air campaign on Serbia last year. But this is the first I've heard of a practicable, usable design for the artillery. It certainly tends to open up the discussion a bit." A Ministry of Defence spokesman said there was no contract for the Matra BAe device, and no funding commitment to the futuristic project. The Matra BAe spokesman said it could be 10 years before it is deployed. Copyright 2000 by United Press International. All rights reserved.
