In the magazine there is a one page Doug McClure article. This article is a miss when it comes to talking about Search. All it says is that McClure is presently starring in the NBC adventure Search. In the rest of the article, Mclure talks about how unpleasant it was having hundreds of beautiful women throwing themseleves at him and the strain it put on his marriage and fighting off jealous boyfriends and husbands. It also mentions that he and Burt Reynolds were pals and shows how quick a hollywood career can take a turn for the worst. The story talks about how McClure was discovered while surfing on the beach and age 20. In 15 years at the time of the article (1972) McClure had only been unemployed for 3 months. Amazing! After Search, he did the Barbery Coast with Willaim Shatner in 1975 and a whole bunch B-movies and some grade Z movies and the awful Out of this World in the 80's. I wonder were it went wrong for the former leading man. I guess a career in Hollywood can go to the dogs as fast as it can take off. I read something similar from the great John Carridine --- he couldn't stand to be not working so if it was stay home or get a check from being in some awful exploitation flick he'd do the latter. High profile or prestige projects are nice, but admittedly few even in Hollywood's (or television's) heyday. It's also great to see some new names on the list. From what I can gather, Doug McClure was one of those actors who was able to find steady work in Hollywood. It didn't hurt that he spent some nine years or more associated with the successful series "The Virginian." Leslie Stevens produced a season of "Virginian" shows as well as the McClure segments of "The Men From Shiloh," so it was this connection that led to McClure starring in SEARCH. Does anyone have the scoop on how he got to star in those "Land Before Time" movies? And who did he beat out for those roles? Of all the Hollywood stories, what amazes me is the career of Orson Welles. Excellent and brilliant early work followed by--well, where do you go from up? Or he forgot the title change, since the point of the skits, and the show, was that they were adlibed...I think. I know later in each show the guest star would read cards from the audience and Jonathan would adlib something. I also remember thinking at the time that the Winters show wasn't that great...which was weird since Jonathan Winters is the master. My guess now is that it didn't work because they had guests who, while maybe great actors, didn't necessarily have the comedic or adlib abilities to give Winters support, instead of dragging down the whole sketch. Folks new to the mailing list might find the 1975 Tony Franciosa interview I posted previously of interest: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/probe_control/message/77 I also made an earlier post listing Leslie Stevens' credits including various SEARCH connections to other shows: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/probe_control/message/94 There is also a necrology of SEARCH people who have passed on: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/probe_control/message/101 Anyone who can add to the list, please do so, although I have posted updates from time to time. With nearly 600 posts to the SEARCH Mailing List by this point, I can see where it can be difficult for new people to absorb everything we have gone over in the last couple of years. One way to speed things up would be to go to the Mailing List home page (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/probe_control), then scroll down to the box that says "Search Archive." Fill in the box with whatever key words that interest you, such as Leslie Stevens, Hugh O'Brian, scanner, etc. and you will get listings of all messages mentioning those keywords. I use it from time to time and find it very helpful in tracking down items discussed earlier. Naturally, this excerpt has some info on Outer Limits in it, too, but it has quite a bit about Leslie and his background and what happened after OL; Probe is mentioned but only briefly. I've taken the first few chapters and the last chapter, and put them in a text file called "Leslie Stevens info.txt." I left out everything in the middle, which is a complete summary of the OL episodes with tons of production notes and trivia. This also has a lot of info about Leslie scattered through it, so I would urge everyone to find a copy of this book if you're interested. It's well worth reading. Gentlemen (and Marta)-- ;) Don't know how many of you saw the eBay auction for the 'personalized' Hugh O'Brian autographed photo that I happened to win last night on eBay. "Why is Jim telling us about this!? That GLOATING so-and-so", you're saying... Not so! Well, the seller sent me this letter after the auction-- it's something that, I suppose, y'all can take advantage of, too! I thought I was bidding on a one-only autograph opportunity, but apparently, the seller has offered to obtain multiple 'personalized' signatures for those that want them. Here's the letter I received from MayberyFAN@aol.com: You are the winning bidder on the above item at $25 + $5 shipping. You can purchase additional autographed/inscribed photos from this celebrity at $25 each, with no additional postage. Be sure to have your payment to me by April 30 as pointed out in the description of the item. If you have any further questions, be sure to ask. Thanks! Mike Mike Creech 7762 East County Rd. 150 South Avon, IN 46123 ------------------------------- I asked Mike for further details in a follow-up letter, and he replied: In a message dated 4/18/01 8:46:08 PM, probecontrol@dynasty.net writes: << Perhaps this meeting has something to do with Mr. O'Brian's charitable causes? >> He is doing an autograph show and plans to donate all of his profits to the Hugh O'Brian Foundation. I have been doing auctions of this nature for 2 years now with no complaints at all. I guess providing a snap shot of the celebrity signing the photo takes away all doubt. If these are to be sent to separate addresses, then the $5 shipping must be added for each separate address. Mike ----------------------------------------- I think it's VERRRRY kind of Mike Creech to offer to obtain multiple autographs for those that want them. Seeing as it's "for charity", it's even nicer! Here is what I suggest for the SEARCH eGroups members that are interested in taking part: Send $25 per autograph to Mike at the above address. As it states above, money must be to Mike by April 30th-- no exceptions! Now, I have some nice copies of a wonderful Hugh O'Brian SEARCH picture that listmember Anthony Taylor was kind enough to loan me to have duplicated (thanks, Anthony!!!). I will send the appropriate amount of photos for all of you to Mike, with MY $25 (and $5 postage to have all the autographs sent to me). When Mike completes the deal, y'all can take your time in sending me $5 each. That will include the cost of reproducing the photograph as well as mailing it back to you. If anyone wants a DIFFERENT photo (of their own choosing), then you must include it to Mike with your payment. I will post-it-note each of the photos I send with the correct spelling of the individual's name when I mail them to Mike. IMPORTANT: Please E-mail me immediately if you are participating, and let me know if you are sending Mike some money, and want the photo I am supplying so I know how many photos to mail him, and can get them ready to mail. I suggest working it this way, because-- 1) time is of the essence in getting Mike the money by the 30th, 2) many of you may not HAVE a Hugh O'Brian SEARCH photo to autograph AND, 3) I am trying to save Mike the trouble of sending out multiple autographs through the mail, seeing as he's kind enough to "go the extra mile". So-- if you want to take advantage of this, all you have to do right now is: Mail $25 to the above address, and then e-mail me and let me know if you need a photo supplied (or if you don't). I hope I didn't make this too complicated, but I wanted to cover all the bases... Thanks again to Mike for his efforts in obtaining the number of autographs that we want, and Anthony Taylor (who didn't know his lent photo would be used in this manner when he lent it to me). OH! Here's a quick picture of the photo. I think it would lend itself to autographing very nicely. Sorry for the low res image-- I never thought I'd have the chance to own a "Probe One" SEARCH autograph-- personalized to ME! Pretty Cool!!!! I'm sure I may have missed some things that could have been added, but we never got that much background information on the Probe agents, except for Bianco being with the Crime Commission, and that wasn't much. I figure this copy gives us a place to start. Anyone who wishes to add to what I've put together below, please do so. It might be good for Anthony to have several different paragraphs on each Probe agent to pick from, so here goes: HUGH LOCKWOOD Hugh Lockwood (Probe One) spent three years in the astronaut training program before becoming a Probe agent. This background gave him vast insight into the high techology and telemetry employed by the Probe Division of World Securities. While not much is known of his previous law enforcement background, one gets the feeling that Lockwood would be equally at home being the sheriff of an old western town, using clever and unorthodox methods in rounding up desparados. While Lockwood is very much a low key, no nonsense type, he can still make jokes after stressful situations, like being nearly thrown off a roof, for example. His martial arts moves are the best in the business. And Lockwood always has an eye for the ladies, much to the annoyance of Gloria Harding back in Probe Control. NICK BIANCO Of the Bianco character, Leslie Stevens noted that he is a razor- sharp character, a smooth, funny 'street specialist.' He knows every gang, bookie, pool hustler, mobster, consigliere, cop, commissioner, FBI, CIA, DFI agent -- he is an encyclopedia of organized crime. He knows the underworld from the gutter on down. Prior to being a Probe agent, Bianco (Omega Probe) spent many years with the Crime Commission, where he honed his skills as an investigator and tangled previously with The Iceman, among others. Placed in 'fish out of water' situations, he is able to dazzle the Lady Dean of a wealthy Girls' School or even a Jackie Onassis type. C. R. GROVER Long on ability, somewhat short on incentive, Christopher Robin Grover is the Standby Backup Probe agent. Equally at home on beaches with girls or in a research library, Grover is the agent whose antiheroic "everyman" qualities cause his adversaries to badly underestimate him, which works to his advantage. Grover's car is that unmistakably sleek yellow Corvette, which causes classic car fans everywhere to drool and take notice. A typical Grover case can take him anywhere in the world, from the streets of Zurich and Las Vegas to the cavernous sub-basements of World Securities Building itself. He may have less actual law enforcement experience than the other agents, but he is still a brilliant investigator who more than delivers the goods at the end. Love reading the character's background. Just to add a few little details. You can use them or not, your choice. Grover said he was in Special Forces in the Army in "Moment of Madness"and he hates his middle name (In search of Midas), and I think Bianco said David (Cullem?) AKA: "The Iceman" trained Bianco when he first joined Probe 10 years ago (which would be 1962). Also remember that B.C. Cameron was outlined pretty well in "Moment of Madness" (Loner, Ex Military CPT, one Niece, and his love of fine food and wines). He is so important to Probe that his record of information has been masked, making him an almost "invisible man" should anyone try to to tamper or track him for the vast amount of inside information he has. I was surfing the net and stumbled onto a very detailed write up of the NBC series "Name of the Game". Since we kind of consider this a Search Prequel/ distant cousin due to the fact that Leslie Stevens produced it, they had 3 rotating stars every week, and Tony Franciosa was one of the rotating stars and his character (Jeff Dillion) is not to different from the Bianco character he played on Search. As I said very good write. I wish they had spent as much money and time on Search as they did that series. If that had happened, Search would probley be write up there with Star Trek. From: dghprobe3@aol.com Date: Mon Apr 30, 2001 5:54 pm Subject: More on Name of the Game Hi gang, I've been enjoying the posts on "The Name of the Game." It was a classy show and had a fairly successful network run on NBC, although it was not that great of a syndicated success (partly due to it being a 90-minute show). Our interest in it, of course, is due to the presence of star Tony Franciosa and Leslie Stevens as one of the writer/producers. I have one episode produced by Stevens and Dominic Frontiere is listed at the end as having done the background music. There is a chase scene in that episode which has music very similar to the chase music heard during "The Murrow Disappearance." Dave Grusin is the one who composed the distinctive opening "Game" theme music. Grusin also did the theme for "It Takes a Thief," which also had Stevens as a writer/producer. That series ran here in Atlanta during late Saturdays during the mid- 70's. At times the Franciosa episodes seem like you're watching SEARCH because he approached the character similarly. I'm told that "Game" ran for a while in recent years on Encore's Mystery Channel. For those on the list who are interested, I have five episodes of "Game." Four of them are Franciosa shows, which are: "The Incomparable Connie Walker," writer/producer Leslie Stevens "The Other Kind of Spy," directed by Boris Sagal "Blind Man's Bluff" "Jenny Wilde is Drowning," directed by Boris Sagal The fifth episode I have is the celebrated Gene Barry episode: "L.A. 2017" directed by one Steven Spielberg. That last one is a sci-fi/fantasy episode in which Gene Barry seemingly travels to the future and sees the effects of pollution and environmental damage years hence. For those who want dubs, note that I can only get two episodes on a T- 160 at SP speed. Otherwise, it would be one episode per T-120. I don't get cable, so someone on this list who has access to Encore's Mystery Channel, please find out if they are still running "Game." I'd be interested in getting a few more of the Leslie Stevens/Tony Franciosa episodes. I know I speak for everyone when I say thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing your dub of "The Gold Machine" episode with us. :) Actually, I'm glad you made that last post. Sometime last year, I got an email reply from someone who used to work with the Armed Forces Network and he mentioned that he heard that SEARCH had been among the shows acquired by Studios USA. I didn't mention this at the time because he didn't sound too sure and I did some searches and couldn't find anything to confirm it. They have a page online at: http://www.studiosusa.com/ Their email feedback address is: feedback@studiosusa.com This page also has links to USA Network and the Sci-Fi Channel. For those who are curious, I found John's (actingman's) post on SEARCH at: http://www.scifi.com/bboard/browse.cgi/1/1/1317 This was apparently the historical post to which Bryan Durk responded and it all led to this mailing list and probecontrol.com. Maybe we should contact Studios USA and ask if they do indeed have SEARCH?
