I was sure people had forgotten "Search," or that I was one of a very few. I see now that I'm in error -- and I'm glad! I am overjoyed to have found ProbeControl.com and have already revived my memories of the show. Do I understand correctly -- some of you all have *episodes* of the show? How do I get a dub? What does it cost? Who do I have to kill? :-) This place is fantastic. I've never forgotten Dominic Frontiere's classic score, even though almost 30 years have gone by since I last heard it. (I've since downloaded it and I use the opening theme when I start the computer and the closing theme when I shut down.) Almost 20 years ago, I bought two scripts from Lincoln Enterprises ("Moonrock" and "Moment of Madness") and several packs of film clips. I don't know what episodes they're from; maybe someone on the board can help me figure it out. Also, I have an autographed picture of Burgess Meredith (for which I wrote while "Search" was still on the air), and an autographed copy of his autobiography, "So Far So Good." I wish the scanners were still available; I'd love to have one. I may yet get hold of a Probe Control hat or shirt. Thanks for the site and the discussion group! They're GREAT! I first started watching the show in the spring, and this one had already seen its second run by december. Just hearing the audio is great if thats all you have, but its not as good as seeing it. It is not one of the very best, but Ive never seen an episode of Search I didnt like. So now the count down is at four. The four that are left represent the very best of the series. Its inconcieveable that someone would record "The Mattson Papers" and not "Ends of the Earth". I have confidence that the remainders will appeare somewhere at sometime. From: "tomatprobe" Date: Mon Jan 14, 2002 1:10 am Subject: The Bullet I cant belive its been 30 years since I last saw "The Bullit". The picture quality is not the best but its a lot better than what we already had from this one. It was one the few Lockwood episodes I saw when it aired in 1972-73(I was more into the Trampas thing). I didnt remember it as well as I thought I did. I always thought it was one of the better stories. I always thought If Search were released as movies w/episodes edited together, this would be one of them. This episode seemed to be one the finest efforts of the whole cast and crew. Its as if this was the last one they made while they still believed the show still had a chance. If I was forced to give up one Search episode "The Bullit" would definitly not be the one. Its unbeliveable this one turned up. Keep'em comming guys, you've been very, very, very sucessful. In answer to a question asked here, I don't know whether or not Frontiere is still alive. However, his sometimes-controversial wife Georgia R. Frontiere owns the St. Louis (formerly Los Angeles, before that Cleveland) Rams...so if Dominic lives and they're still married, it's likely he's in the St. Louis area. > Also, I have an > autographed picture > of Burgess Meredith (for which I wrote while > "Search" was still on > the air), and an autographed copy of his > autobiography, "So Far So > Good." Sounds good. I understand that in later years, before his death and when his health permitted, B. Meredith liked going to conventions to sign autographs and talk with fans about the Penguin, ROCKY, OF MICE AND MEN etc. Probably SEARCH also if he was asked about it. Anthony From: "questor_vaslovik" Date: Tue Jan 15, 2002 1:40 am Subject: Theme From Search.... Folks, I have been a French radio and TV announcer for many years. As I already stated in a previous e-mail to "ProbeControl.com", I know for a fact that a colleague of another FM radio station broadcasted the original theme of Probe/Search back in 1980. The quality was such that is impossible it came from a TV broadcast (because is was excellent stereo quality). It was either released on vinyl under its real name (i.e. Search/Probe) or it is a waltz that was released under another name (this happens every once in a while). It was the long "movie" version, NOT the short version used for the TV show. Believe me, this piece of music DOES EXIST as high quality stereo recording on vinyl. I'd love to reach someone related to Dominic Frontiere to get this info (real title, album, date of release, media used, etc.). I don't know if D. He has a number of things to say about his association with Orson Welles, his movie career, as well as the "Batman" series, but I was disappointed that there was no mention at all of "Search" or Leslie Stevens. Does anyone know why this might have been? Was "Search" a bad memory for Burgess Meredith? Or because it only lasted a season, he figured hardly anyone would remember it? More later, Don H. If it was sent out to radio stations and/or others as a vinyl recording, copies could still be gathering dust in storage rooms somewhere. Hopefully someone will be able to do some searching and find a copy. A few weeks ago, I finished a CD-R collection of Frontiere's music from "The Name of the Game" and "The Rat Patrol," some of which is similar to music heard in SEARCH. Jim Alexander is the only one who has gotten a copy of that so far. John and Bryan will be getting it with my next batch of filmclip scans. By the way, I recently sent to Bryan for posting onto probecontrol.com, my filmclip scans of "A Honeymoon to Kill," one of the SEARCH episodes we still don't have on video. Bryan, let us know when those are posted and ready to view. Also, to let everyone know, and to avoid duplication of work, I do have the following Dominic Frontiere LP albums in my collection: "HANG 'EM HIGH," "THE STUNT MAN," and "THE OUTER LIMITS" CD. In the near future, I plan to transfer these to CD-R and send them out to interested SEARCH group members. Let me know who would want copies of these. More later, Don H. As you can tell by the scan, the photo of Mr. Meredith has been through quite a bit during its time with me. It's been framed, unframed, put into a scrapbook, taken out of the scrapbook, passed around, brought back, etc. If one of our digital artisans could do that, I'd be most pleased. How high quality a scan do you need? My scanner does a good job on high resolution, but it creates a major-league big file. > I have Mr. Meredith's book, "So Far, So Good." Or because it only lasted a season, he figured > hardly anyone would remember it? > I'd suspect the latter; Mr. Meredith did so very much during his career, and most of it was either glossed over or not even mentioned in his book. (I was especially touched by his recalling the death of Charles Laughton.) However, there is the possibility that "Search" was indeed a bad memory; Mr. Meredith is quoted as saying he took the job for the money and "phoned in" his performance as Cameron. Though, as has been pointed out in this discussion area, he was the consummate professional actor and even now, were I fortuate enough to have an episode to watch (hint, hint), I doubt I would see any boredom or unhappiness in his portrayal. Thing is, I think I went with it cause of the title (reminded me of Howard Hawks' RIO BRAVO) and the box advertised that Stuart Whitman (a good actor in his day) was in it, no other names mentioned on the box. But it turns out that it was Jim Brown's first film and of course not only was Franciosa there but he was the one who got the nomination (as below). I see that film critics in a couple guides I have say RC was like THE COMANCHEROS (which I haven't seen in a while) but IMO it also resembled DUEL AT DIABLO with Whitman=Bill Travers, Brown=Sidney Poitier, Richard Boone=Dennis Weaver and Franciosa=James Garner. To get the whole thing back to SEARCH, it's always interesting to see different actors and acting styles in the same production, as with the (4) leads in RC or the (3 rotating) leads in SEARCH. Wouldn't it have been great to have TF, Hugh O'Brian (I checked the spelling) and Doug McClure interacting in one story? Maybe in fanfic... > I respect a guy who grabs an "Oldie But Goodie" > off the shelf! Too many people only pay attention > to the "New Releases" at the local Video Store! Sure, and then I found out after watching it that Tony Franciosa got a 1964 Golden Globe nomination in the Best Actor-Drama category for RC. He was up against both Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole from BECKET, Anthony Quinn as ZORBA and Fredric March in SEVEN DAYS IN MAY. So far the only SEARCH episodes we have run into have been in English yet all our tapes have been from overseas sources, with the exception of the PROBE pilot and that 16mm transfer to video of the "Let Us Prey" NBC backup print. I think we've listed the countries we know of which have run SEARCH beyond the initial NBC run: Japan (AFN's Far East Network), Australia (Network Ten), England (on BBC as SEARCH CONTROL), Ireland, and Costa Rica. Are there any other countries that can be added to the list? Warner Bros. television would know. Hopefully, one of our contacts on this list might be able to check that out. It would be interesting to know which countries have run SEARCH so far and which ones are running it currently. It would be a good way to find those last four episodes we seek, along with upgrades of what we already have. It might be difficult for you to reply to the Spanish fan even if you were able to direct them to babelfish. Maybe someone else on this list who knows a little Spanish could send them a reply? I would ask them if SEARCH ever aired in their country and was it dubbed in Spanish? The other possibility is that some countries aired the show in English, but had subtitles for the language of that country. More later, Don H. I never missed an episode of Search. I even started to write a computer game of Search, but I never got far with it. Computers were still rare, primative and expensive in 1972 and my skills were pretty poor. I remember the name change, and the story behind it. I remember a promo with Franciosa threatening to jam a platter in a guy's mouth crosswise. I remember a stuntguy doing a cool looking elbow roll across the street in the opening credits. I remember Lockwood commandeering a chartered 747 over Cameron's protests and jetting off with the babe-of-the-week at an episode's end. A few other miscellaneous scenes and plots. But except for the pilot, which I copped off WTBS a few years back, I haven't seen any of this stuff for almost 30 years. I thought I was the only one who remembered it. A couple of weeks ago, while suffering from insomnia, I ran across the probecontrol.com website. Finally, something good from insomnia. After seeing a recent picture of Angel Tompkins, I'm glad to see that time has treated her kindly. I had a bit of a crush on her back then. For the last couple of weeks I've been plowing through the thousand+ messages in the messagebase here. I came in thinking maybe I could throw in some stuff that hadn't been mentioned before. Did you know that Albert Popwell was in all those Dirty Harry... oh, you know that. Maybe that Dominic Frontiere also did music for... that too, huh? Ah, but there was a series called Fortune Hunter that was a copy of... old news? Okay. Nope, not in The Business. No memorabilia either. Whazzat? Oh, okay. I'll just be over here. Hello "observer345": Welcome to the SEARCH group! I enjoyed reading your post. You don't have to have lots of memorabilia and stuff to be part of the group. We get more of a kick out of sharing our memories of the show when it originally aired on NBC back in '72 and '73. We were all younger and in many ways it was a different world back then. When you receive some episodes, if you want to post reviews or reactions, please do so. We enjoy reading and sharing those as well. Hope to hear more from you in the future. More later, Don H. Actually I was so inspired by Search myself, that at one point I connected a chain to a magnet which had been removed from the back of a loudspeaker and hung this from my neck and, as if by a leap of faith, asked my older brother what I had to add to this to make it a working scanner. He told me that maybe I should forget about the scanner, and start off with a microphone. Well,it was a plan. > I remember a stuntguy doing a cool looking elbow roll > across the street in the opening credits. You are probably refering to the last scene in the opening credits with theme music; when Tony Fransciosa looks to be getting hit by the front of a car and kinda falls down while pointing his ring mounted scanner towards the camera. I do not know if this scene is taken from one of the episodes or not. I actually remembered Cameron at Probe-Control in the opening credits which was a shot taken looking down at his console from above, which only lasted a couple of seconds. I am still amazed at the opening credits every time I see them. I didn't know quite how to say it before, but it is almost like the opening credits are taking the viewer inside the machinery, sort of 1972 futuristic cyberspace, with all those Search logos floating around and those matricies of blue squares racing across the screen. Maybe this was Leslie Stevens impression of what it would look like to be inside of a computer. Interestingly enough, Control Data Corperation, who supplied alot of the computer equipment in the Probe Control set, went on to become Cray Research. > But except for the pilot, which I copped off WTBS a few years >back, I haven't seen any of this stuff for almost 30 years. I would highly recomend starting off by getting the 2 most recently discovered episodes 'The Bullet' and 'One Of Our Probes Is Missing'. Aside from some annoying switching from colour to B&W, the picture quality is some of the best I've seen for Search episodes. They're bound to bring back alot of memories! I haven't been saying much for a while, but have really been enjoying the most recent posts! I'm about ready (finally) to get the collection of episodes from Don, but who has the 2 newest additions? I think the older members on the list have already heard this tale, but I'll retell it for the newbies: I was in 5th grade when Search ran. I was a sci-fi freak, (FREAK more like it!), and I remember my Mom sitting up with me wondering why I wanted to stay up past bedtime to see this show. After a bit she says " I see why you like this show." The control room and the spy gizmos really wowed me. I used to walk around the playground talking to Probe control. I never could date a girl from my class after that! (Well, doing Time Tunnel and Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea during recess in previous grades didn't help either!) My fave as a kid was the one where Doug McClure was trying to keep Probe from getting blown up by an electronic freak-out device that caused electronics to act like fireworks! There's still a number of eps I've NEVER seen and I'm looking forward to checking them out! Ken C. We do have the audio of that episode on CD-R. Check with John (actingman@i...) or Don (dghprobe3@a...) and we can tell you how to get it. From the audio, we can tell that Bianco is yelling, "Get that license number," while he is falling. The "Live Men" script is posted here (hope these links work). That scene is at the beginning of Act Four: http://www.probecontrol.com/Scripts/Live%20Men.txt Filmclip scans of "Live Men" are posted here: http://www.probecontrol.com/Episodes/livemen1.html We don't have any clips of Bianco falling off the car, but we have a clear shot of the car without Bianco at this link: http://www.probecontrol.com/Episodes/images/08406car.jpg We have a clear shot of another "Live Men" scene which appears in the opening credits. This is of Bianco on top of a high shelf of shoes in a warehouse-type building, which is the headquarters of the main heavy, Mr. Stonestreet. In the opening credits, Bianco can be seen jumping from one shelf to another. Here we see Bianco crouching behind a hobby horse and some sort of mannequin, ready to jump: http://www.probecontrol.com/Episodes/images/08466bia.jpg More later, Don H. Thanks very much for those VCDs. I did have to open "Winfile" and create an Association so that "DAT" files would play in Windows Media Player. After that, your VCDs of SEARCH played just fine. I tried it in my DVD player and it played fine there too. However, you can't just stop it and go back to where you were. It goes back to the very start again and you can't fast forward where you want it to go. I guess there is no way around that? You did a really nice job on those VCD labels. I need to scan one of them and post a JPG to our "Files" section so people can see how colorful they are. I don't know if many people on the SEARCH list will want the VCDs, although there are folks who are big fans of them. I understand that there are some countries where VCDs are very popular. I have also heard that VCDs are (currently) relatively free of many of the restrictions now in place on DVDs. So, I guess if anyone on the list wants VCDs, get in touch with Larry and find out how to get them. More later, Don H. There is a great interview with Seymour Cray "The father of the Supercomouter" BTW, it's a really good read. http://americanhistory.si.edu/csr/comphist/cray.htm Here is an excerpt which sort-of answers your question: DKA: Let's talk a little bit about '72, you're transitioning out of Control Data and starting a new company. How much of that had to do with issues of design of machines? I'm sure that part of the issue for Control Data was developing a customer base and continuing to work with those customers. Much of your design philosophy is often to go in new directions. Was that an issue at the time? SC: It certainly was and it has to do with perception. In 1972 the perception was that there wasn't much market for big scientific computers any more. The market had been saturated. The thing to do was to expand into commercial areas. Very familiar story. I was willing to accept that perhaps the market would be small and so if I started a small company that was very dedicated to this one narrow area and if I called it "Cray Research Inc." to emphasize the character of the company, there would be an opportunity because I could see Control Data discontinuing all those efforts and pretty soon I'd be alone again in the marketplace. That pretty well happened because Control Data did not follow through with new innovations in scientific computers, essentially left the marketplace to me. So I was able to repeat the scenario of starting again a small company at the right point time in the marketplace where few machines are significant and a few years later sure enough people began to perceive that maybe there was a market for large scientific computers again. So another cycle started. >and what does Cray Research do NOW? That would be telling, but here is Seymour Cray's vision of where the direction of Supercomputing should go: http://americanhistory.si.edu/csr/comphist/montic/cray.htm If all this piques your intrest in Cray Supercomputers: Cray Supercomputer FAQ and other documents http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/town/park/abm64/CrayWWWStuff/ Enjoy! Bianco looks to be driving a 70's Ford Mustang with mags. It's got double headlights too. Don-2 From: "dghprobe3" Date: Wed Jan 30, 2002 3:23 am Subject: Bianco scene & 2 different cars Hi Don-2: In re-reading my original post, I didn't make clear that there were two different cars involved in that "Live Men" scene. As you pointed out, the one at the link is indeed the bad guy's car, the car without Bianco. Bianco fell on his own car. Again, the problem being we don't have filmclip scans of Bianco falling. A while back, John (actingman) asked if I could do an article with some video grabs identifying by episode all the scenes we see in the opening credits. Another item on my list of things to do. :-) Back in post #283, Ed Novit said Bianco's car "does appear to be an Astin-Martin (British) 'DB' series, but I cannot determine the number." http://groups.yahoo.com/group/probe_control/message/283 For other shots of Bianco's car: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/probe_control/message/280 After you get to this page, scroll toward the bottom and download the ZIP file. There should be a couple of JPG photos in there. Can anyone confirm Ed Novit's identification of Bianco's car?
