Thrilled tofind a website for"Search"! Enjoyed the "high"-tech feel of the series, plus the performances of three old friends in the leads. Had previously watched Hugh in "Wyatt Earp", Doug in "The Virginian", & Tony in "Name of the Game". Thought at the time that "Search" came the closest to capturing the feel of the James Bond films in a television series. Hard tobelieve so many people were fans. Excited by the possibility of tape dubs allowing me to experience the thrill again. Look forward to meeting all of you! Best, Chris. That's an interesting scenario but oddly one-sided. In SF, there's always been scenario stories where the Nazi or even the Japanese won particular wars. Philip Dick's 'The Man In The High Castle' is a demonstration of that. The real problem is that the development of, say, computer technology which would allow such snooping would have different repercussions, namely you'd have computers for all as well & a different financial situation. All the early wars were about territory & the people either poorly educated or poor. Like today, the world would have been seen to shrink in size with advanced computers. Something that is news today is spread across the world today. True, there might still have been a war but I doubt if it would have come out the same. This is a scenario that can be played with. There's plenty of variations if you want to mind-play for a little exercise. My main consideration is that if somethings are fundamentally different, then the resolutions of them are likely to be different as well. Hello Marta Do have more info or where we can look up about this little old lady?? The journalist aspect of what I do tends to get concerned about message distortion. This isn't a reflection on you. What tends to happen is an event is reported, a series of journalists want to put their angle on something, often without checking or own agenda &, before you know it, the two events aren't connected as they should. That is, for example, the letter might not have anything to do with why she was imprisoned. What if she was 'Ma Baker' in disguise?? In such cases, it's always wise to trace back down the line to the original story. All right, I can see the next question here: How can I trust the news reports? Look for consistency of facts between them than opinions first. Actions have to be a little higher than opinions although even the former can be misinterpreted. On their regular shows they don't do that. They do have the usual annoying logo in the corner...but everyone does these days. Their runs of Laugh-In are, I am happy to say, banner free. Why they are degrading these honored shows and the supporting documentaries with the banner on the bottom of the screen is anybody's guess. I was very happy to watch a few episodes of East Side West Side, and delighted to get some complete Ernie Kovacs' 1956 summer replacement series episodes...but the banner has to go. The real question is if they will run these shows in the future as part of their regular programming. They are in some cases only running 5 episodes of each series they are spotlighting. It would be nice to see all the episodes of each show. And of course a clean run of Search. Seasons Greetings Fellow Search Fans; I am very glad I finally found you! From the looks of your mail archive, you've been around since the end of 98. I am a bit slow on the uptake since I didn't even begin my search for sites like yours till about six months ago when it finally dawned upon me that when they say, "everything can be found on the Internet." it doesn't only mean contemporary things. I began searching via Google trying to find web sites dedicated to all the old beloved adventure shows I was weaned on. Man From Uncle Secret Agent Wild Wild West I Spy Avengers The Saint Mission Impossible Mannix Six Million Dollar Man I had success with all of them except for "Search". Luckily last week I took another stab at it by searching for all the leading men's names "Hugh+Obrien+Doug+Mcclure+Tony+Franciosa". I hit on two of the e-mails on the "probecontrol.com" site. As I said in the beginning, I am glad I finally found you. I have quickly combed through all the e-mail trying to get a sense of what has been going on, and I am amazed by what you have been able to accomplish given the original modest size of the membership. Jim Alexander's meeting with Hugh O'Brian was particularly fantastic. I enjoyed reading about his good fortune, and Jim, if you happen to read this post, thanks for sharing the experience. Given the other fan sites on the web, I knew all of you Search fans were out there somewhere, but It was really frustrating considering that I didn't know how to find you. I am however amazed by how many of you were able remember details of episodes that you hadn't seen in decades. Long ago I taped the series pilot when they repeated it on channel 11 in New York. Mine isn't a very good copy as I only had rabbit-ear reception at the time. In fact, mention of the pilot being available from Movies-Unlimited, in one of the past e-mails, prompted me to order a copy a few minutes ago. Even though I had an old copy on tape, I still had to watch it again the last time it was repeated on TV many years ago. I have always harbored a longing for its return and always felt it was just a matter of time before I would see it again, since almost every other old series has managed to make a comeback in one way or another. However, my excitement only grew when I read that you have almost all the episodes in various form and quality. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could e-mail me a list of what you have and what media type it is in. My interest of course is in acquiring a copy. As I understand it there have been tapes and VCDs made along the way and most recently you were able to get very good copies from Australia. Please let me know in what form it is available and how much it will cost if it is indeed possible to get a copy of the episodes. By the way since there are so many members with good memories, I wanted to know If my recollection is correct with regard to another program that I believe was aired back to back with "Search" when it was broadcast in New York. I seem to recall a series with Bill Bixby that I think was called "The Magician". If anyone can recall it, please let me know. Lastly, I wanted to mention that I noticed several postings that mention DVD. I attempted to first try transferring some VHS tape TV footage to a DVD via my computer, but most of my attempts were less than satisfactory. However I recently came across advertisements for DVD Recorders, and purchased a Panasonic DVD Recorder Model DMR-HS2 – you can see the various specs and reviews for it if you search the web. One of the unit's touted features is the ability to make high quality recordings to DVD-RAM and DVD-R; The DVD-R is supposed to play on various DVD players once it is put through the unit's "Finalize" process. 1 hour per DVD at the highest quality and 2 hours per DVD at the next lowest quality. I am pretty much a laymen when it comes to video, but I'll pass along my experience for anyone who is interested once I have a chance to evaluate the machine and the quality of the recordings that it produces. I was thinking that DVD might be the next medium to be used to preserve the copy of the episodes that members of the group now have. That is what I am hoping to do with the large number of video tapes that I presently have. Happy Holidays! However I recently came across advertisements for DVD Recorders, and purchased a Panasonic DVD Recorder Model DMR-HS2 - you can see the various specs and reviews for it if you search the web. I too just found this group a little over a month ago. The people here are great and very helpful. I remember The Magician with found memories. Bill Bixby has always been one of my old time favorites. I even admit to enjoying The Hulk series :). I just received my pre-recorded pilot tape from MoviesUnlimited. It was back-ordered for a long time. Hopefully you will get yours soon. I also just received copies of the episodes from Jim and Don, also on this list. All but one are VHS and one is a VCD. Once Christmas arrives I plan to use some of the equipment I am getting to dub all the VHS copies to my computer and burn them to VCD format. I am sure they will be glad to help you out if you want copies as well. If all goes well with my dubbing process, I would be glad to make VCD copies available as well. Let me know if you are interested. Have a great Holiday and again, welcome! Both lasted one year, and both underwent format changes in the middle of their only season. I was going to write about some of those changes, but I found a page that has more details then I knew about: http://www.tvparty.com/remagician.html I would also say that I think in the first half they made a point of his using his magic to aviod violence, in the second half under the new format, I remember thinking that it suddenly got more violent. I remember the first episode under the new format he particularly got the pogies beaten out of him. Hi and welcome aboard: I've also been looking at various DVD recorders and have noticed that some of the prices have been steadily dropping. If the price continues to go down after Christmas, I may go ahead and buy one of these units, but I want to do some more research before I do. I'm concerned with compatibility with other DVD players. I don't want to get just any DVD recorder and find that the discs I make will not work on other players, etc. I don't like having my computer tied up with burning DVDs, so the standalone unit looks like the next best option, especially if they include their own built-in editing tools, etc. It would be nice if we could make clean DVDs of these newer Search tapes we have. If the editing tools make it possible, we could repair Trevor's "Adonis File" missing portions with Russo's version and make a more complete rendition of the episode. Trevor's "Midas" is missing the closing credits, but we could edit in Russo's version, etc. If the editing tools allow it, we could also have an alternate audio track over some of the closing credits. We could add the original Ed McMahon voiceovers from our/my old NBC audio tapes of Search, that sort of thing. We could also add extras to some of the DVDs, such as combine Jim Alexander's "wild" audio of his meeting with Hugh O'Brian with the photos he posted a while back. We could add a slideshow sort of thing, composed of various filmclip scans. We could run music or a voice narration with this, similar to some of the articles I've been posting in recent months. If anyone else has any ideas for DVD extras for Search, pass it along. We might be able to try it. --Don H. From: pdcsnr@a... Anyone got them available yet? I'd like to ask the group a favor; I subscribe to the list in digest format and it would help immensely if people would edit quoted posts somewhat to hilight only the portion they are responding to. This digest contained 9 messages, almost all of which contained unedited text of all the previous messages. By the last message, I could barely tell what was being responded to because of all the extraneous text. I know most people sub to get all messages as they post, and it is not nearly as large a problem when they are read that way, but it sure would help those of us who subscribe to the digest. Tiffany Fowler, Thad Roberts and Shae Saur pleaded guilty in federal court in Orlando last week to conspiracy to commit theft and interstate transportation of stolen property. Undercover FBI agents arrested Roberts, 25, Fowler, 22, and a fourth defendant, Gordon McWhorter, 26, in Orlando in July. Saur, 19, was arrested in Houston the same day. The student workers were fired after the arrests. McWhorter, a college friend of Roberts, is scheduled for trial in February. Investigators say the group placed an ad in May on the Web site of the Mineralogy Club of Antwerp, Belgium, offering to sell "priceless moon rocks" collected by Apollo astronauts in 1969 and the early 1970s for $1,000 to $5,000 a gram. Two months later, a safe containing moon rocks from every Apollo mission was discovered missing from the space center. Officials said the inventory offered by the suspects came from the safe. Date: Sat Dec 28, 2002 1:38 am Subject: Excuse Me, Is Your Tooth Ringing? Excuse Me, Is Your Tooth Ringing? By Lakshmi Sandhana 2:00 a.m. June 21, 2002 PDT Soon the phrase "I've got something in my tooth" -- instead of conjuring up fears of root canal surgery and the like -- could refer to the latest in wearable wireless technology. A new design for a tooth implant that receives digital signals from radios and mobile phones will be on display at the Science Museum in London beginning Friday. Designed by Jimmy Loizeau and James Auger, research associates from MIT Media Lab Europe, this collaboration between the Science Museum and the Royal College of Art aims to increase public understanding of science, technology and the arts by showcasing young talent. Part of the "future products" exhibit, it is supported by the National Endowment for Science, Technology & the Arts. "James and Jimmy's designs raises some real issues about how far we want to go with using biotechnology in our bodies; the possibilities are endless," said NESTA spokesman Joe Meaney. With your jawbone playing antenna and your head the receiver set, your newly enhanced teeth could allow you to hear the alarm clock without waking your partner, tune into your favorite music and even receive stock market information while you're out playing golf. Incorporating the technology is a relatively minor procedure. A micro-vibration device and a wireless receiver is implanted into a natural tooth during routine dental surgery. Sounds are transferred from the tooth into the inner ear by bone resonance (digital signals being converted into audio). And for those who might be worried about a buzzing mouth, sound reception is assured to be totally discreet. "The vibrations are on a molecular level, so the user only experiences pure sound streaming into their consciousness," Loizeau says. The implant is designed to work in tandem with either a dedicated device or a modified mobile telephone, which can pick up the long distance signals and transmit a local signal to the tooth receiver. Capable of being fully customized to suit user requirements, reception can be switched on and off at will with the aid of the dedicated device. "We realize that having unwanted sound information arriving directly into the user's brain would resemble technological schizophrenia, therefore maximum control is essential." Auger says. Currently the tooth works only as a receiver. "Basically for sound to be transmitted it needs to be created in the first place; speaking would (make moot) the discreet nature of the implant," Loizeau says. For those high-volume lovers, the technology can be implanted in any number of molars. Having more than one tuneful tooth implanted creates a "surround sound" effect, a little like having lots of speakers in your car stereo. With the minimal hardware required, estimated costs of the implant are quite low and because the dental surgery is pretty basic, the procedure is relatively cheap. With health issues being minimal, about the same as the issues rasied by the use of mobile phones, the tooth is expected to be available in markets in the near future. Why would anyone want voices in their head? "It offers a 'Darwinian' advantage to the user whereby they have an advantage over their competition, although not a random mutation but a chosen one," says Auger. "We are very interested in the ethical debate surrounding bionics and post-human evolution." According to UK press there's three formats still vying for position. Panasonic being one of them. One of the others was a hard drive format so I think that one can be dismissed. The prognosis wasn't particularly inspiring for any of them as there's a new DVD format on the horizon which can store even more data. Let's just hope that its DVD drive is backward compatible or there's going to be a lot of angry people around who've being buying pre-recorded DVDs so far. Like a lot of you people, I tend to think it's best to wait until the in-fighting between formats has been resolved before buying any particular model. Whichever, I can't see editing episodes together without using a computer with a large RAM. At least the latter is now possible. I mean, you'd need to have a similar thing stuck to a DVD-R player in the first place to do more than straight copying. If anything, when looking at the models it would also be best to check out what ports they have & whether it is possible to link to a computer system. As to burning DVDs via computer. The simplest course of action is set the operation to run over night when you're asleep. The first copy from videotape to DVD will take the longest but DVD to DVD copying is bound to be a lot faster simply because it's file copying not restricted to the length of the episode to run off. Hmmm...that's going to be expensive in terms of having DVDs on the computer. If your hard drive has enough space, copy onto that & then multi-copy back to DVD would sort that out. We had the complete showing of 'The Magician' in the UK when it first came out.. It was at a time when every permutation was tried out with detectives. Having an acknowledged magician on your case was doomed to failure. I mean, why not have a target on your chest & say, 'Strip search for any fancy gadgets he might be carrying.' I didn't really think Bill Bixby was entirely right for that role. He worked wonderfully in the Hulk simply because the part demanded being restrained. A stage magician tends to be a little more flamboyant & a bit more pizzazz would have done wonders to the role & probably why it didn't last. If memory serves me, didn't Ricky Jay do most of the tricks for 'The Magician'?? Actually, he wasn't the first TV magician detective. In the UK, there was one called 'Ace Of Wands' in the children's hour that would have given it a far better run for its money. Alas, no one bothered to keep the originals & is lost in time now. Hello John the acting man WXP is wonderful at some things. I've yet to have to face a reinstallation. A lot of the older 16 bit programs aren't always tolerated & like you I've got a separate partition for WME for when I need it. Microsoft says there is a better patch fix on their website for the older programs but I've yet to pin-point which one it is. A lot of the problems I found with mine stemmed from the limit to how many 16-bit programs could be on line on boot-up. In the end, I left the wallpaper changer on manual & left the Personal Desktop random vocal selector on automatic. With your programs, you might have over-loaded the stack if any of it is called up on boot-up. Hello Larry Thanks for the info on locating Terrapin on the Net. It's a bit puzzling why they haven't dabbled with DVD-Rs yet. Maybe they're waiting for the dust to settle although not quite the way as above but more to ensure all formats are catered for. Hello Don Re: Moonrocks. Doesn't say much for NASA security keeping all the rocks in one container though, does it?? Alas they weren't diamonds. That was one major problem with the 'Moonrock' episode. If moon diamonds did exist then they'd be prone to fracture under Earth gravity. Lockwood might not have been totally guilty for it breaking up into dust. The process might well have started before he dropped it. There are simple enough tests that would have been run today to check for stress factors. Hi everyone I have close friend who is a few years older than me, but he was always into action and adventure series. When I mentioned that I found probecontrol.com where people still fondly remember and discuss Search, he was really surprised, but he certainly remembered the show and sounded enthusiastic about the site and this group. I e-mailed him the web address just a short while ago. Hopefully the membership will swell by one more in just a short time. There has got to be a lot more people out there who remember Search more than just fondly. How do we reach people to let them know that probecontrol.com exists? I am sure that there would be a lot of happy people if they only knew about the web site. Franklin From: "actingman_jc " Date: Mon Dec 30, 2002 9:12 pm Subject: Re: New Member Joining Soon? I don't spam, but when I am talking about other tv shows on their lists, I will slip in a sentence or two about Search, using it as an example, depending on what I am talking about. For instance, on the Space:1999 list I might bring it up as another show that changed or altered it's format, just as S99 did. On a Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea list I was able to bring it up right on topic when I saw in Short Circuit that they used explosion shots of the Seaview in the breifing tapes. I have brought it up on the Galactica list...when I learned something about Leslie Stevens that the Galactica crowd would be interested in. I love doing that and seeing who responds with "I remember that show!" We can all do different things. I like what Don did at an SF convention he was working...he ran Moonrock in the screening room as time filler during the event. On generic topic bulletin boards you can make mention of the show if you have something to say. I posted to the boad at the SciFi Channel, and that is how I "met" Bryan...and that led to the creation of the web site. So you just have to spread the word...respectfully. --- In probe_control@yahoogroups.com, "franklinberke " wrote: > > There has got to be a lot more people out there who remember Search > more than just fondly. Hey they REMEMBERED SEARCH! (LOL) Reflecting on the above the spy and espionage genre was a dying style. Once again I would attribute the fallout of the Watergate scandal as neutralizing the viewers' interest. Of course, that was not the only factor. Although SEARCH last aired in August 1973 something else was coming along to sustain the interest in the genre on American television: The Six Million Dollar Man starring Lee Majors. >> Of course in the end, they decided to go with Roger Moore and make "Live and >> Let Die" and he became the JB for the 70's and early 80's. His best attempt was Baa Baa Blacksheep as Greg Boyington. Lamentably, I remember the short-lived NBC series A Man Called Sloane. I'll use the words from a Starlog interview when Conrad was asked about it which is as follows: "It was a terrible show," snaps Conrad. End of subject. In fact, I am often curious what kind of 'age range' the discerning folks who've stumbled across (or rather sought-out!) John and Bryan's probecontrol page encompass. I usually don't go for this kind of thing, but seeing as we're a tight-knit kind'a group (though we're strung across more than one continent), I was wondering if y'all would be interested in writing a bit about yourselves? How old you are. What you do for a living. Where you live. And if you feel led, your first (best?) memories of our favorite little one-season wonder? I'll start the ball rolling: I'm Jim Alexander. I'm 43. I've worked in local Television production for about 22 years now. I live in Evansville, Indiana (that's in the southernmost tip of the state). I remember watching the very first broadcast of the SEARCH pilot, and being thrilled by it. I was on hand for the SECOND airing, and of course... the series. I was so crazy about the show, I audio-taped the pilot, and many of the episodes (though the recordings are vastly inferior to the nice recordings listmember Don Harden made in '72-'73). I've loved comic books since I was small, and being a frustrated comic book artist... even co-wrote a series of 'Search' comics during the period when the show was out--with my best buddy at the time. We gave the show a slight 'slant' however. Our Probes worked NOT for World Securities... but for S.E.A.R.C.H.-- The Space and Earth Association's Rescue Control Headquarters. ;) And the comic 'starred' me (as Probe One, natch'), and all of my friends... in 'supporting roles' as various Probes, Probe Control technicians... and the like. Anyway... before I run off at the mouth TOO much... I'll end. And I hope the rest of you might feel led to tell us a bit about YOURselves... :) Jim probecontrol@s... From: bob.greenberger@a... I'm 44, and while I live in LaGrange, Georgia (near the Alabama border about 75 miles SW of Atlanta), I'm originally from Chicago. I am a middle school social studies teacher, part-time television news anchorman (WCAG-TV), and author of two science ficiton novels. SEARCH was the high point of my early years in high school. I, too, audio-taped each episode, and (shades of geekdom) carried what passed for a portable cassette recorder to school with me to listen to them again and again. Wish I still had those tapes. (I can still quote many episodes verbatim -- and did so, along with the episodes, as I re-watched them on video this past year.) As we all remember, back in the early '70s portable cassette recorders were about the size of the M Volume in the Encyclopaedia, but what the heck -- I could take SEARCH with me anywhere I went! Though I loved all the episodes, my favorite character was Cameron. So much so that I wrote Burgess Meredith and asked him for an autographed photo (specifying that it NOT be him as The Penguin) and he was gracious enough to send me one, personally inscribed. There is a scan of this photo in the Files section of Probe Control's Yahoo! group. I too have a large assortment of film clips from Lincoln Enterprises, with some mounted in film holders and the rest still in the little brown envelopes they originally came in, almost 30 years ago. I don't have the novels, but I did have the ViewMaster reels until not too terribly long ago -- lost them in a move, I think. That's me...now it's someone else's turn. End run... I feel a little bit on the young side comparatively as I am now 38 which I guess made me 8 when Search aired. I have lived in the New York area all my life, grew up in Brooklyn, and only moved out to Long Island three years ago when our apartment became too confining for me, my wife, and twin baby boys. I do computer programming and some very light web development for a relatively small employee benefits company. Unfortunately my memory doesn't serve me as well as the rest of you. I vaguely remember one Search episode where I think Cameron was kidnapped, blind folded, and had to remember where he was taken via the sounds he heard while he was being transported somewhere. I probably have all the details mixed up, but I never forgot the series theme. I would hum it to myself on occasion. In my first message # 1836 - Seasons Greetings Fellow Search Fans; I am very glad I finally found you! – I mentioned some of the original adventure series I grew up with. In recent years, it has been implausible but suspenseful series like Stingray and now Alias that have piqued my interest. Alias especially with its first seasons' episodes always ending in a 'cliff hanger' has really been enjoyable. I will hopefully get the dubs for Search soon, and I am eager to see them again. I maybe jaded but it seems that there aren't as many or as good quality adventure shows as there used to be. I'll catch you all sometime soon. Franklin Berke
