Perhaps it is due to the war that the activity to this group came to a crashing halt. For a brief time ABC ran Veritas-The Quest and one episode was reminiscent of Search. A member of the Veritas team was to infiltrate a stronghold to acquire an artifact. She possessed a miniature camera for visual and audio transmission to her colleagues watching her activities at a nearby makeshift base. It is a pity ABC pulled the plug on this show before giving it any kind of a chance. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I can’t believe I’ve found this discussion group and you guys. Between this and all the goodies to be found on the Probe-Control website, it’s like having Christmas in, well, April. Last Friday, I stumbled across the Probe-Control website purely by accident and even though I’m still working my way through all the data compiled there, I am stunned at the amount of work and research that went into the site. And here I was, thinking that it was only little old me that remembered and loved “Search.” I immediately subbed to the discussion group. I’ve been trying to prepare, reading through the backlog of posts to get some idea of what goes on here and what’s expected of me before jumping in with my two cents, but I’m just so excited at finding you all, I couldn’t wait. So if I’ve missed anything that’s already been covered, please have patience with me. I’ve read the archived posts only up to mid-2001. Firstly, I’d like to thank the creator[s] of the Probe-Control website. Er ... wow. Wow. WOW. You’ve done a LOT of work! Also, thanks to those of you who’ve posted to the list such interesting episode and back-story commentaries, general information and episode synopses. And once again ... this “Search”-ophile is SO glad she found you all!! : ) A little background on moi: I was 11 when “Search” first aired on NBC and this kid was hooked from the first episode. My best friend and I both developed huge crushes on C.R. Grover. ; ) I eagerly awaited Wednesday nights at 9 p.m., and with my clunky, 1972-era tape recorder [cylindrical mic on the end of a wire and all], I recorded most of the episodes and the opening theme on audiotapes [tapes long lost over the years, darn it], and for the brief time “Search” was on the air, I was one happy camper. For the longest time, I held on to the “Search” TV Guide cover with that lovely painting of the guys ... but alas, over the years, that also vanished. : ( However, I do still have the original Weverka novelization of the pilot [if there’s one thing I do hang on to, it’s books.] Dominic Frontiere’s main title obsessed me and I’ve probably spent the past two decades, ahem, searching for the “Search” main theme on cassette or CD, but was able only to record the longer version from the pilot movie when it aired on cable some years back. I bet you can imagine how happy -- nay, ecstatic -- I was when I located the Probe-Control website and found not only the audio version of both main and end “Search” themes -- but the main credit roll, too! That was the icing on a very sweet cake indeed. I hadn’t seen the “Search” main credits since 1973 ... but it was like coming home. The clip was just as I remembered it. A wee bit about me: I’m a former Midwesterner [grew up in Chicago, now living on the East Coast] and an English Lit major who somehow ended up in PC tech support [‘twas a long and tangled road from analyzing Mark Twain to troubleshooting software glitches; don’t ask how I ended up here because even I don’t know. Perhaps my experiences watching Cameron and his crew hovering over computers every episode had something to do with it?] What drew me to “Search”? That awesome, driving Dominic Frontiere theme. The cool technology -- those scanners and audio implants especially. The storylines -- I love “superspy” stuff. Yeah, sometimes a few of the plots were a bit hokey, but I never went to sleep on an episode. And, er, the physical appearance of the main three Probe operatives wasn’t halfway bad, either. ; ) My favorite “Search” episode? Hmm. As it’s been nearly three decades [30 years? gasp!] since I last saw “Search”, I don’t trust memory to make a valid judgment. I remember snippets from the episode where Grover rescues Cam from the clutches of a deranged wartime acquaintance ... another episode involving Grover, a rogue agent and some sort of EMP device programmed to take out Probe Control ... the episode where Bianco is trapped on the island with his crazy ex-girlfriend and everyone else chasing after his hide ... the ep where Lockwood gets injected with a poison [I think] and has to find the antidote before it kills him ... and wasn’t there an episode which ended where Cam stood by and let Grover be hauled off to jail, then went off to dinner with C.R.’s date? My favorite character? In 1972, my fave was C.R. Grover, hands-down. Although Lockwood was definitely the coolest of the three and Bianco the most formidable, I always liked goofy old Christopher Robin the best. And crotchety ol’ Cameron was a big favorite, too. I loved his humorous interaction and frequent impatience with his wayward Probes. Once I heard Cam tell someone to “cease and desist immediately” and immediately drove anyone within earshot nuts by spouting that phrase whenever I got the chance. And speaking of driving anyone within earshot nuts, I do believe I’ve rambled on enough. I hope I’ve sufficiently explained who I am and why I’m here. And what’s all this about dubbed episodes available on tape? Oh, do, DO tell. Seriously, if anyone’s got eps on tape[NTSC] or in MPEG/MOV format on VCD/CD-R and are willing to run copies, please contact me off-list. I didn't necessarily mean to imply a direct connection between fiction and reality, but there are some parallels here and there, especially concerning how fast epidemics can spread. Interesting that Parker was a "carrier" of his depth disease. So far we haven't heard much about SARS carriers, although we probably will in the near future. --Don [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] 2062 From: bob.greenberger@... My brother and I use to think we were the only two people in the world who knew this show existed (LOL). I too felt like it was Christmas too when I discovered the group almost three years ago. You must you have a very good memory of the episodes you described. Grover coming to Cam's rescue was titled "Moment of Madness" (one of the last episodes of the series), Bianco being hunted on an Island with his "not to wrapped tight" ex-girlfriend was "Let us Prey" (one of the last 15 episodes before the producers switched to the new format of the series). Lockwood being shot with a poison bullet(In my opinion is the best episode of the series) was "The Bullet". "Shortcircut" ( a fan favorite & Doug McClure's first episode) was the episode with Grover trying to save Probe Control from Blowing up. Finally My personnel favorite episode and the one I best remembered as a child was "A Honeymoon to Kill" which has Grover looking for bride who is about to inherit millions dollars in a couple days if she not killed or kidnapped by her family members. Grover is hauled off to jail at the end of that episode for breaking numerous laws while trying to solve the case. You description of of the Probes dubbed "Big Three" was very accurate and who could every forget that killer theme song that still sounds great today!. I've been missing out on this for three years? Argh. Stupid me, I've been perusing Amazon and various online used-music places looking for the Frontiere score. I never imagined there'd be a site or group devoted to the show itself. Sigh. If only I'd just gone to the, er, "Search" engines earlier ... ah, well, better late than never. I'm happy I finally found you. > You must you have a very good memory of the episodes you described. Nah. In 1972-'73, my behavior towards "Search" would have best been described as "obsessed." Between my "drop-everything-at-9:00-Wednesdays-for-'Search'" behavior, begging parents and siblings to be quiet for an hour [yeah, right] while I recorded audio from the TV and discussing favorite eps [and fawning over Grover] with my best friend all week until the next ep aired, I do believe my parents would have verified the "obsession" verdict. It's not so much a memory thing -- after 30 years, my poor old brain doesn't recall ep titles and plot details and couldn't name the guest stars on a bet, but certain bits and images and lines of dialogue have stuck with me to this day. "Click. I am a camera", for instance. : ) And every time I spotted O'Brian, McClure, Franciosa or Meredith in a movie or TV appearance later, I always flashed back to "Search." Talk about obsession. : ) > My personal favorite episode and the one I best remembered as a child was "A Honeymoon > to Kill" ... But reading Debbie's excited, kind words, I realized the web site is suceeding far more then I could have hoped. Don stated the history correctly. Bryan secured the web site and added all of my content (which was many film clips and all of the scripts) as well as other things we generated. I started up this mailing list, and gradually people found either the site or the list. Don came along with a huge number of clips, and audio copies of the episodes, and once I was done with Bryan's high-tech slide scanenr, I sent it to Don, and he's been scanning his own, and other people's clips since. Jim had his meeting with HOB, Adam introduced me electronically to Angel Tompkins and she shared some thoughts, Bruce enhanced the theme from the pilot...and others that are too numerous to mention. Bryan's main idea was to have a site where people would come and say "Yeah...nice site...I even have a few episodes on video..." That's why we are at a point where we are missing only one episode. In finding episodes we have succeeded...but to know we are going beyond that to really keep the memory of the show alive...is far more then I ever expected to happen...and in a way even more satisfying then getting viewable copies of the shows. I was wondering if everyone else felt the same way. I mentioned to Tom that, yes, since we have found the videos, the importance of the audios has diminished. Up until we found the videos, the audiotapes were ALL we had of certain episodes. (And until we find the video of "Ends of the Earth," the audio CD is our only document of that episode besides the script.) The audios do have historic and nostalgic significance. First, they are of the original NBC airings. Each tape has something on it we don't have on video, such as complete teasers, complete music from various act openings and closings, scenes to next week, some local station identification of the time (which is a whole other area of broadcast "air check" history), plus the Ed McMahon voiceover in the closing credits (another "air check"). Also, over the past few years, many people have requested some of the audio CDs. A number of people who've joined the list audiotaped SEARCH too back in the day, but lost their tapes over the years. Having a copy of one of our audiotapes helps bring back memories of the show when it originally ran. When we get around to making our own DVDs, some of these audio extras can be added to our DVDs the same way they put audio commentary and radio ads on movie DVDs. If we take the time, we could edit our own video together to "recreate" some of the scenes to next week. Another example: The Ed McMahon voiceovers can be placed over the video of the closing credits as a second audio channel, for those who want to hear how it sounded when it ran on NBC. One thing I have always done is rip the audio from my favorite tv shows, movies, etc. for playing in my car. My wife and I have done this for years. On long driving trips, it is great to be able to use your imagination to graphically 'paint' what you are hearing. It sure keeps the boredom down! I also play my fav's while driving to work sometimes instead of my books on cd's that I also listen to. I say, bring em on! How else would we know many of the items that were taken out in syndication? I've got original VCR recordings of the 1985-1987 Twilight Zone series, taped from the original run of the series. These were never run again in that same way; in syndication they were cut to shreds and the narration was redubbed. The bumpers were never rerun, as well as other odd little things that will never see the light of day again, and might even be destroyed. Some of these episodes were only shown once on the network run, like "Search." They will never be shown again in that manner, like "Search." These are important, archival recordings that we need to preserve, if only to prove how wrong the networks were in canceling "Search."
