Date: Tue Jul 1, 2003 0:06am Subject: Hugh O'Brian & HOBY in Nebraska dghprobe3 http://www.columbustelegram.com/articles/2003/06/08/news/news2.txt HOBY program looks for leadership potential By JEAN WILSON/Telegram Assistant Editor COLUMBUS - About 55 years ago, the humanitarian, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, shared his philosophy on having a reverence for life. Television and movie actor Hugh O'Brian - best known for his Wyatt Earp series - has been following through ever since those nine days he spent with Schweitzer in Africa. It was there that Schweitzer told O'Brian that the most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves. On Saturday, O'Brian was the keynote speaker at a Lions Club State Convention seminar in Columbus. He talked about his continued efforts with the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program (HOBY) which finds, recognizes and develops leadership potential in high school sophomores. "That's when you really start thinking about where you are and where you want to be," O'Brian said. The program is meant to encourage and prepare the next generation of civic and corporate leaders for American's future. O'Brian said each of us have been dealt a hand of cards. "Some of us pick them up and play them, some of us don't," he said. O'Brian promoted his ideals of getting involved and being open to new ideas to the convention goers. Recalling the riotous 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, O'Brian told a story about being notified at 3 a.m. by HOBY facilitators that black activist Eldredge Cleaver was going to be in the same hotel. The facilitators thought it would be best to get the young HOBY participants away from any potential disruptions. The young participants were quickly awakened and were in the hotel lobby when O'Brian noticed Cleaver signing into the facility. Then Cleaver noticed O'Brian approaching the front desk. "Hey Wyatt Earp, what the hell you doing here?" he asked. After explaining his HOBY-related purpose of being in Chicago, O'Brian, Cleaver and the young people sat on the floor and talked about their individual views on life. Now a panel discussion on diverse issues takes place at state HOBY forums every year. The Nebraska event was held last week. "Did somebody take the time to give you answers or at least an opinion, (when you were young?)" asked O'Brian. "(We can't solve problems unless we) put it on the table and discuss all sides of it. ... You don't cover up tough subjects, you explore them." He said that many people ask him why he has devoted much of his life (still 80 hours per week, according to O'Brian) to helping the country's future leaders focus on their talents and goals. "(When they've gone through the program,) you've got a young person who is ready to take on the world. They really believe in themselves." Following through with the lives of HOBY participants shows O'Brian that 100 percent of them graduate from high school. "All because somebody cared," he said. On Friday, The International Association of Lions Clubs director Ed McCormick of Wichita, Kan., was in Columbus and said the Lions Club is a group of caring people who have joined together to help their communities. "It is the world's largest service organization and growing," McCormick said. "Any person who wants to make a difference ... and give back to the community, should join the Lion's Club." He said HOBY helps the young participants to be more responsive to the positive things in life as well as to channel energy and knowledge. Hi. New guy Jon here. A few months back, I found some episodes that I had recorded on crappy Radio Shack cassette tapes. The audio quality isn't terrific -- you'll probably hurt your ears on a couple of the episodes -- but I've digitized them and removed most of the hum. (They were recorded by a monophonic Panasonic cassette deck that was wired directly into the speaker of the television.) The episodes that I have: - Pilot (original opening, with rescue) - The Goddess Kali - The Packager - Flight To Nowhere - Suffer My Child - Ends Of The Earth - The Clayton Lewis Document - The Mattson Papers The audio is now all in MP3 format, monoaural. Glad to hear that Actingman, Jim, and myself were not alone in audio taping "Search" back in those network days of '72 and '73. Did you manage to record any of the original commercials at all? I edited out all of them, however, Jim recorded the audio of the NBC rerun of "Live Men" with all the commercials and bumpers, etc. The only "extras" in my audio tapes are most of the local station identification as the episode began. Are your MP3s available on CD-R? If so, some of us might want to do some trading. Actingman has some of my tapes already in MP3 format, so you might get those from him. I also have a few "Search" VCDs I can dupe, if you'd be interested in those. Beyond that, we do have 22 of the 23 episodes available on VHS video, plus the "Probe" pilot. So let us know if you'd be interested in those. The only ep we don't have on video is "Ends of the Earth," so it's nice to see you have an audio of "Ends" as well. And speaking of original commercials, we have one version of "Let Us Prey" on VHS video that is a transfer of a 16mm network print that contains all the original commercials and mid-point bumpers and includes the "scenes to next week" trailer for "Honeymoon to Kill." --Don H. ---------------------------------------------- --- In probe_control@yahoogroups.com, "dxsbach" wrote: > ...I found some episodes that I had recorded on crappy Radio Shack > cassette tapes. It was basically a self congratulating look back at ABC's old shows, which offered a brief overview of its' seminal westerns. They showed a few short clips of its' more famous westerns (ie. The Big Valley, and Wyatt Earp) and then, a few actors representing the shows slipped onto the stage and waved at the audience. Old Hugh was right there next to that guy who used to play the Bionic man and later a Stuntman/Bounty Hunter... (Hmmmmm.. Who was that guy? Okay, I am trying to be tongue in cheek here, but its not working.. I know he was Lee Majors). Anyway, I got the impression while looking at the program that the actors spoke a little about their shows, but the directors or producers of the television special, obviously didn't think these actors, and the shows they played in were important enough for us to hear their speeches. ABC cut to a commercial, and that was that. Hugh looked sprightly and cheerful as he came on stage. The way he was "palling" around with the others onstage, gave me the impression that he was ready to do more than just play the convention circuit. Has anyone heard if ABC will be rebroadcasting that special, or if there are video captures of Hugh and Lee together? Thanks! Hi Mike: You are probably correct on the above. I remember NBC ran a 50th Anniversary Special narrated by Orson Welles during Fall 1976 and I know it hasn't been run again. I do have a complete audio tape of that (I believe it's without commercials, but it may have station IDs, I'd have to check). THE GODDESS OF DESTRUCTION My original tape is labeled "The Goddess Kali", probably because I missed the beginning of this episode and didn't see the credits. Apparently the previous NBC program ran late, or there was a news bulletin which preempted the first four or five minutes. My tape begins with an announcer saying "...an old Indian cult of professional killers, who worship this particular statuette". The episode itself starts with Grover saying "...and be killed by strangulation." There is a blank section of approximately 75 seconds, occuring at about 45 minutes into the tape. I'm not certain why this blank section exists. The blank begins about 1:40 after the villain says "Goodbye, Grover"; the last dialog heard is "You all right?". After the blank, the next words are by Grover: "I can explain that." There is no trailer for the next episode. Voice-over on end credits: Ed McMahon for The Tonight Show. Robert Blake, Trini Lopez, Alex Karras, Senator William Proxmire Some commercials were taped, mid-program and before the end titles. THE PACKAGER This episode is very muddy, and extremely difficult to hear in places. It is complete, though. :) There is no trailer for the next episode. A few commercials are included, post-opening titles and pre-end titles. FLIGHT TO NOWHERE Pretty good audio. There is no trailer for the next episode. Voice-over on end credits: Ed McMahon for The Tonight Show. Ricardo Montalban, Maxine Weldon, Uri Gellar, Eskimo Indian Olympic winners. All of the regular commercials are present. SUFFER MY CHILD Audio is muddy, but not as bad as "The Packager". That's the good news. The bad news: there's a pervasive hum throughout the program. There is a trailer for "Ends Of The Earth". No commercials are present. Voice-over on end credits: Ed McMahon for The Tonight Show. Johnny Mathis, Ben Gazzara, Merle Oberon, David Steinberg ("God, whom you'll remember from last week's sermon..."). ENDS OF THE EARTH Pretty good audio. There is no trailer for the next episode. All commercials seem to be present. Voice-over on end credits: Doc Severinson for The Tonight Show. Robert Blake, Phyllis Newman, Chet Atkins, Dorothy Unack(?). THE CLAYTON LEWIS DOCUMENT Great audio, relatively speaking. :) And every time that I hear Craig Stevens, I can only think of _Peter Gunn_. There is no trailer for the next episode. All commercials seem to be present. Voice-over on end credits: Ed McMahon for The Tonight Show. George Gobell, Earl Holliman, Henry Hite, Bill Preston, Bob Rosefsky(?). THE MATTSON PAPERS Audio is a bit low, but understandable. No commercials. There is no trailer for the next episode. Voice-over on end credits: Ed McMahon for The Tonight Show. Guest host: Joey Bishop. Fernando Lamas, Rip Taylor, Liz Torre, Mark Spitz. THE PILOT I have two versions of the pilot, when it had been renamed as "SEARCH" (like you can tell on an audio tape :). They were probably taped from the WGN (Chicago 9 VHF) late movie in 1974 or 1975. I haven't done a detailed comparision, but they sound identical. Both versions open with gunfire, and Lockwood's rescue attempt of the vice-consul. "Which means that I'm entitled to a few days off, all expenses." They are 3/4" in diameter, 1/8" shy of what it should be. I have one on EBAY, check it out. I have 10 of them. Frank T. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? We had it in the UK and it was hugely popular. the pilot show is still regularly shown on UK TV. The theme tune was just excellent. I think there's scope for making a movie version nowadays.
