Date: Sun Jan 11, 2004 9:11am Subject: SEARCH Transformation worldsecanalyst It has been stated often about the transformation and format change of SEARCH going from a technological thriller to a crime drama. I've got a more cogent answer about this now after I've been viewing the episodes from the later season. I've just noticed in the main title sequence that Anthony Spinner's name is featured rather than Robert Justman. By then Leslie Stevens would easily sit in the background as like a constitutional king. I suspect the Spinner stewardship was meant to produce a series amenable to the network's requirements. If I'm not wrong the unceremonious transformation began with "Countdown to Panic." As the episode began you see a much more lighted Probe Control, but P/C is not shot in its totality. There are hints of a rearrangement. Later in the episode Cameron is seen stroking a mag tape drive. This is not a standard vertical tape drive, but a horizontal tape drive. Additionally, there is a cast shakeup for Probe Control. In the episode before "The Packagers" Griffin and Kuroda had diminished roles, and Keach was gone. In "Countdown" Harris is introduced for telemetry and sundry functions. In "24 Carat Hit" Harris" Miss James joins the P/C team. 2435 From: Mike Valerio Date: Sun Jan 11, 2004 9:00pm Subject: Re: SEARCH Transformation mvscreen Leslie Stevens and Bob Justman were probably viewed as "sci-fi/hi-tech" guys who needed to be pushed aside if SEARCH was going to make the trasnition to cop show. Anthony Spinner was clearly brought in to makeover SEARCH into a conventional crime drama. While Spinner's credits may have included shows like THE MAN FROM UNCLE and THE INVADERS, he's best known as a writer/producer for his crime credits which included THE FBI, DAN AUGUST, KOJAK and CANNON. CANNON, of course, was the show that was kicking the crap out out of SEARCH on a weekly basis. It makes perfect sense that some exec (probably at NBC, rather than at Warner Bros.) would look to make a fix like that. 2436 From: "dghprobe3" Date: Sun Jan 11, 2004 9:37pm Subject: Re: SEARCH Transformation dghprobe3 Hi all: Before we get too far afield in this area, Angel Tompkins earlier confirmed for us on this list (thanks to Adam) that Leslie Stevens quit SEARCH after NBC got pissed upon discovering he was working a deal with a different network. Nowadays, producers dealing at the same time with different networks is common, but back in 1972 the practice was frowned upon. Bob Justman worked with Stevens since the days of "Stoney Burke," which pre-dates "The Outer Limits." My belief is that Justman did not want to remain with SEARCH if Stevens was no longer there. Anthony Spinner was initially the story editor for SEARCH, then became producer at midseason. Again, Angel mentioned that it was Spinner and John Strong who were the ones who tried to fill Stevens' and Justman's shoes, but couldn't quite do it. I'm sure NBC renewed SEARCH for eight more episodes with the stipulation that certain changes be made, with which the new producers complied. I'm certain that Stevens would have fought against most if not all the changes that were made. Spinner and Strong apparently didn't quite have the clout to have their way that Stevens had. The first of the later eight episodes produced was Franciosa's "24 Carat Hit," followed by McClure's "Numbered for Death." These episodes show the new Probe Control at it's brightest. Notice that the next episode, O'Brian's "Countdown to Panic," has Probe Control with it's lights notably dimmed, along with lights shining downward on the back walls. The set stayed dimmed and lit this way for the rest of the series. I speculate that O'Brian, as he returned for his last episode, saw the changes to the Probe set and opposed them. After all, he was a co-owner of this series. He may have wanted to return to what they had earlier, but they were too locked in to go back, plus two "new set" episodes were already in the can, so it seems they went for a compromise: the lights at Probe Control got dimmed. --Don H. Reference is also made to a book devoted to Quinn Martin history. Is this book available as a mass market item, or is it privately published? Keep in mind also that "Cannon" began in early 1971, a year before the "Probe" pilot appeared. When SEARCH began in Sept. 1972, "Cannon" was into it's second season and had developed a following. SEARCH competed directly with both "Cannon" and Julie Andrews' variety show. Ratings for SEARCH were reportedly respectable during this time, causing Julie Andrews to disappear from that time slot. What finally killed SEARCH ratings-wise was when ABC exchanged Julie Andrews' show for "Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law," starring Arthur Hill and a pre-bionic Lee Majors. "Owen Marshall" was also into it's second season, an advantage SEARCH would never live to see. This file which can pretend to be the Windows calculator, opens a security hole in the infected user's computer which can be exploited by hackers. "As users come back to work after the weekend they are at risk of finding the malicious Bagle worm in their email inbox," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos. "The worm pretends to be a "techie looking" test email to fool people into running the dangerous attachment - not knowing they are potentially giving hackers the power to run destructive code on their computer." "Computer users should be wary of any programs delivered by email even if they seem to come from a known contact. If you email programs around, you should get out of this habit now, as it encourages bad security practice," continued Cluley. Colin Johnson mailto:rcj@... January 18, 2004 PORTLAND, Ore. - It may not be long before you hear airport security screeners ask, "Do you plan on hijacking this plane?" A U.S. company using technology developed in Israel is pitching a lie detector small enough to fit in the eyeglasses of law enforcement officers, and its inventors say it can tell whether a passenger is a terrorist by analyzing his answer to that simple question in real-time. The technology, developed by mathematician Amir Lieberman at Nemesysco in Zuran, Israel, for military, insurance claim and law enforcement use, is being repackaged and retargeted for personal and corporate applications by V Entertainment (New York). "Our products were originally for law enforcement use - we get all our technology from Nemesys-co - but we need more development time [for that application]," said Dave Watson, chief operating officer of parent V LLC. "So we decided to come out sooner with consumer versions at CES." The company showed plain sunglasses outfitted with the technology at the 2004 International CES in Las Vegas earlier this month. The system used green, yellow and red color codes to indicate a "true," "maybe" or "false" response. At its CES booth, V Entertainment analyzed the voices of celebrities like Michael Jackson to determine whether they were lying. Besides lie detection, Watson said, the technology "can also measure for other emotions like anxiety, fear or even love." Indeed V Entertainment offers Pocket PC "love detector" software that can attach to a phone line or work from recorded tapes. It's available for download. Instead of color-coded LEDs, a bar graph on the display indicates how much the caller to whom you are speaking "loves" you. V Entertainment claims the love detector has demonstrated 96 percent accuracy. A PC version is due next month. The heart of Nemesysco's security-oriented technology is a signal- processing engine that is said to use more than 8,000 algorithms each time it analyzes an incoming voice waveform. In this way it detects levels of various emotional states simultaneously from the pitch and speed of the voice. The law enforcement version achieved about 70 percent accuracy in laboratory trials, according to V Entertainment, and better than 90 percent accuracy against real criminal subjects at a beta test site at the U.S. Air Force's Rome Laboratories. "It is very different from the common polygraph, which measures changes in the body, such as heart rate," said Richard Parton, V's chief executive officer. "We work off the frequency range of voice patterns instead of changes in the body." The company said that a state police agency in the Midwest found the lie detector 89 percent accurate, compared with 83 percent for a traditional polygraph. The technology delivers not only a true/false reading, but a range of high-level parameters, such as "thinking level," which measures how much as subject has thought about an answer they give, and "SOS level," which assesses how badly a person doesn't want to talk about a subject. How it works Nemesysco's patented Poly-Layered Voice Analysis measures 18 parameters of speech in real-time for interrogators at police, military and secret-services agencies. According to Nemesysco, its accuracy as a lie detector has proven to be less important than its ability to more quickly pinpoint for interrogators where there are problems in a subject's story. Officers then can zero in much more quickly with their traditional interrogation techniques. V Entertainment is leveraging the concept to let consumers in on the truth telling, eyeing such applications as a lie detector that could be used while watching, say, the 2004 presidential debates on TV. Called Ex-Sense Pro, the V software measures voice for a variety of parameters including deception, excitement, stress, mental effort, concentration, hesitation, anger, love and lust. It works prerecorded, over the phone and live, the company said. V Entertainment recommends it for screening phone calls, checking the truthfulness of people with whom you deal or gauging romantic interest. The display can show each measured parameter in a separate window, with real-time traces of instantaneous measurements while flashing the overall for each parameter, such as "false probable," "high stress" and "SOS." Ultimately, the company plans to offer versions of its detectors for cell phones, dating services, teaching aids, toys and games. 2449 From: "dghprobe3" Date: Fri Jan 23, 2004 5:20am Subject: World Securities bldg used in pilot identified dghprobe3 Bill Webb has identified the ridged glass building used for World Securities in the "Probe" pilot. Richard Hatch made a BSG video trailer in the hopes of producing his own version of a revival (Please, I don't want this to prompt a discussion about the new version). Terry Carter, who is now living in Paris, was visiting LA at the time; so, Hatch was able to inlude Carter within this trailer. 2452 From: "dghprobe3" Date: Sat Jan 24, 2004 6:11pm Subject: Terry Carter (The Mattson Papers) dghprobe3 Terry Carter has been connected to a number of Leslie Stevens projects over the years. Besides SEARCH, he was a regular on "McCloud," and (as you mentioned) "Galactica." Stevens wrote and produced some episodes of "McCloud" and was a co- producer, at least during the early stages, of "Galactica." I've often wondered if Carter's connection to Stevens didn't help him to be cast as Col. Tighe in BG. Richard Hatch was at Dragon*Con Atlanta last year and gave an hour talk about "Galactica" which I got on video. Anyone who wants a VHS dub, or an audio CD of the speech, let me know. I've never seen Hatch's trailer, but I've heard many great things about it. I also understand Hatch was able to get footage of John Colicos as Baltar before he passed on. ---------------------------------------- --- In probe_control@yahoogroups.com, yorktowncmdr@a... wrote: > ...It stunned me to see Terry Carter (Battlestar Galactica - Col. That's true. John did agree to do a shoot for the trailer. Richard was in a hurry to produce it though. I'm happy that John got a chance to appear in it before his passing in April 2000. It is my understanding the BSG was partly the brainchild of Leslie Stevens. Typically, after contriving the pilot, he relegated production to Glen Larsen. 2454 From: "Marta Dawes" Date: Sun Jan 25, 2004 4:33am Subject: RE: Terry Carter (The Mattson Papers) martadawes It's interesting to speculate, based on Leslie's prior work, what he would have done if he'd been involved with the series through several seasons. Though I thoroughly enjoy BSG as it is, Leslie could have made it a truly visionary series. I believe that there is one incorrect entry for "Search" in the listings, but I am sure that someone can have the proper information. Plus, Lincoln Enterprises had scripts for "Kung Fu" and the proposed series based on "Genesis II/ Planet Earth" televison movies. It appears we've been getting one or two new people per week for the last couple of weeks. To give more details about Lincoln Enterprises, I met Majel Barrett at one of the St. Louis SpaceTrek conventions back in 1984. At that time, she mentioned that they did still have SEARCH material available, and that it was all in one closet. But she added that they were looking for a dealer to buy it, and that they would probably end up selling the material at auction. About a year or so ago, Mike Okuda had Gene Roddenberry, Jr. check Lincoln for any SEARCH material that might still be there. Results were negative and they don't know what happened to it. Majel would be the one to ask and so far it seems no one has been able to get to her to find out more. Hopefully we will hear something in the near future. This post might help things along a little. :-) --Don H. ---------------------------------- --- In probe_control@yahoogroups.com, "Morningstar" wrote: > Yes, Lincoln Enterprises did have the scripts for sale. I checked the link, and there is an opt-out on that page. It is another round of tracking. "Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo Group users. If you are at all concerned with people knowing where you go or what you do on yahoo......check it out. I did and I thought you would like to know. Yahoo can track us and see what kind of sites we are looking at!! BUT, ALSO HOW TO OPT OUT OF IT!! Which I did, first thing! Here's how.... Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo Group users around the net and see what you're doing and where you are going - similar to cookies. Take a look at their updated privacy statement: http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy/us/pixels/details.html About half-way down the page, in the section "Outside the Yahoo! Network",you will see a little "click here" link that will let you "opt-out" of their new method of snooping. I strongly recommend that you do this. Once you have clicked that link, you are opted out. Notice the "Success" message the top the next page. Be careful because on that page there is a "Cancel Opt-out" button that, if clicked, will *undo** the opt-out.
