The name may not ring a bell, but you'd recognize him if you saw him. Maxwell generally appeared in most Universal and other crime shows as a somewhat craggy but hardboiled and believable police lieutenant or other authority figure. He appeared in the Search episode "Moment of Madness" as Cameron's commanding officer in a Korean War flashback scene. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/people/obit_brief_display.jsp? vnu_content_id=1000601064 Aug. 06, 2004 Former AFTRA head Maxwell dies Frank Maxwell, a former AFTRA national president who was deeply dedicated to both acting and union service, has died. He was 87. Maxwell acted in feature films, television and onstage for more than 60 years, yet he also found time to serve as the guild's president from 1984-89 as well as first vp at Actors' Equity, five terms on SAG's national board and as a trustee of the AFTRA Health and Retirement Fund. Maxwell died Wednesday (Aug. 4) from complications of heart disease at his home in Santa Monica, according to AFTRA. I had some problems this weekend. I somehow got a variant of CWS (CoolWebSearch) spyware which hijacked my AOL browser. What it does, popups appear out of nowhere, then it slowly starts to push down the page you are viewing in favor of a suspicious "web search" page with no brand names on it, and you can't stop it except by going offline. When you go back online, it starts back again. I had been hearing a little about spyware and browser hijacking in the past few weeks, and by chance had already downloaded AD-AWARE 6.0 and SpywareBlaster, both of which helped remove the trouble. But it took a little while because it would have helped to have had a few of the other tools listed below. I'm not an expert on any of this, but will be glad to answer whatever questions I can. First, go to FindAnISP. http://www.findanisp.com/ Look for an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that is local to you. AOL is a service and is not a standard. As a service, it is more expensive. Avoid ISPs that are service oriented (JUNO and NetZero fall into this catagory) They are not providing what you truly want, which is direct access to the internet. Plus, they use proprietary connections which takes away choice. But, look at cost and connections to find the best provider. Second (or if there is no alternative to AOL), go to Google and search for "free virus protection." http://www.google.com/ I installed AntiVir or AVG Anti-Virus on a friend's computer and was quite impressed by it. http://www.free-av.com/ http://www.grisoft.com/ But look and decide for yourself. At this point, there is no reason to pay for a commercial virus software when there are high quality free programs available. Next, if you have set up you computer to dial up your new ISP (you have changes providers successfully) you now want to log onto the internet. The one program that you currently have is microsoft internet explorer. Once connected to the ISP, us ie to go to FireFox, Mozilla, or Netscape (or all three.) http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ http://www.mozilla.org/ http://www.netscape.com/ These browsers are all developed on the Gecko engine. They have been improved over the years and are arguably the best. Firefox is the newest. While it is in pre-release form, it is stripped down and only does browsing. If you want a fast browser, this is the one to use. Mozilla has more features for those who do more than just browse sites on the internet. It uses the same gecko base, but includes a mailer and newsgroup reader. Netscape is the most robust. It is a little behind the current release of Mozilla, but it is tested for the common user. The best part is that since they are free, you can download all of them and see which you prefer. They have pop-up blocker, so that annoyance is a thing of the past. One last thing: if you don't have it, you might need WinZIP, for those who don't know how to use console commands (i.e. "dos"). You can download WinZIP from here: http://www.winzip.com/ Remember, download the free (trial) version. I hope that this helps. I was thrilled to have the opportunity." I have to echo Jim here. Hi, gang. I know I've been out of the loop here for quite awhile. But I've been following the traffic. I just didn't have anything worthwhile to add to any of it, until now. One thing I was remiss on was telling you about Angel Tompkins' appearance at the Asheville Film Festival (now its called the Western North Carolina Film Festival) last November. It was the first trip to NC for Angel and her husband, and since Asheville is only two hours away from me, it was a chance to see her again without having to fly across country. One of the benefits of being her friend was when the arrangers of the festival invited Angel to appear, she insisted that I be included in the package. That meant that, except for the cost of the hotel room, the festival comped all of my meals and the ticket for the visit to Biltmore House, which they had arranged as a treat for the invited celebrities the day before the festival started. But the real treat--besides seeing my old friend Angel again--was getting to hobnob with the other celebrities. Those were Anne Lockhart, Ruth Buzzi, Mako, Kathy Garver, Don Pedro Colley--and Barbara Luna. I guess I'm lucky personality-wise, because I was quickly accepted as one of the group, and it was fascinating being with all of these people I had grown up watching on the screen. It helped that I was familiar with all of their cinematic vitae, since that helped break the ice. My impressions of these people were almost completely favourable. One thing I really appreciated was that they understood that they were there to be with the fans, and treated all of them with respect and friendliness. In turn, all of the fans were respectful. I had never been to a convention before, so it was an interesting experience to view from my "catbird" seat. Some quick impressions: Mako was a very down-to-Earth fellow, with an incredibly wry sense of humour. Ruth Buzzi is funnier in person than she is on screen. Don Pedro Colley (for those who don't place the name immediately, he was in the first PLANET OF THE APES sequel--BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES. He is the black man who says to Charlton Heston and James Fransicus through bars of their cell: "Mr. Taylor, Mr. Brett, we don't kill our enemies. We make our enemies kill our enemies.") was a highly intelligent fellow and provided the most interesting conversation that week. Anne Lockhart was a bit starchier than her screen appearances convey, but I just chalked that up to a bad week. Kathy Garver was an absolute delight. Of all the celebrities there-- except for Angel, of course--she's the one I would most like to have as a friend. Since I was looking for something to do, and since the celebrities all accepted me, I pressed myself into service as something of a major domo. Standing guard on their exhibit tables and making arrangements through the hotel for them, that sort of thing. (I didn't mind, since I felt a bit guilty as receiving the hospitality of the arrangers without being anybody important myself.) I got to spend a lot of time with Kathy Garver in doing that, and she is, to resort to a cliché, one of the nicest people I ever met. SIDEBAR: One quick anecdote. There wasn't enough room in the rented van to transport all of the celebs to Biltmore House, so I volunteered to take some of them in my car. Angel's husband, Ted; Kathy Garver; and her brother went with me. It was a raining terribly and I had never been to Asheville before, so I was being painstaking about not getting lost and getting to Biltmore House safely. I assured them all that we would get there on time and in one piece since the last thing I want to have happen was to go down in history by driving the car over an embankment and have the news report: "Kathy Garver, beloved star of FAMILY AFFAIR, was killed to- day as the car driven by ADAM BENSON went off an embankment and exploded in a fiery crash." That was no way to become a question in the entertainment section of Trivial Pursuit. And as for Barbara Luna. I have to confess, for some reason, I was prepared not to like her. She had always come across as rather brittle on screen and that gave me the idea that she might be something of a diva in attitude. I was pleased to discover that I was completely wrong. She is an enchanting woman. She'll stand her ground when she feels it is right to do so--and I have no problem with that. But she was as warm and nice as anyone could be and spared no effort to please her fans. As for Angel. Well, after all these years, I thought I'd pretty much had seen her in all states and conditions. But I had never seen her "on" as a celebrity before. It was amazing. One moment we would be talking like old Army buddies at her table, but when a fan would approach, she just . . . dazzled. She could turn on the radiance and for that five minutes or so, she treated that fan like he was the only person in the room. It was genuine enough; she really appreciates her fans. But what I found remarkable was that she could just turn up the rheostat like that and make the experience memorable for each fan. That was one memorable week, I tell you. Thank you so very much for taking the time to share the details. Besides Luna, the only other person you mentioned whom I had the pleasure of meeting was Kathy Garver, and she DID seem very 'giving' and sweet to her fans. And I must admit--she seemed to have even MORE people who wanted her autograph (and this was at a Cincinnati Comic Book convention!) than even David Carradine--who was at the next table over. ;) I was surprised. :) Anyhoo-- I envy your meeting Mako, Colley, Buzzi and the others. Happily, I've posted within the photos section my meetings with both Malachi Throne and Barbara Luna. If you look carefully at the white clipon badge on my jacket it my own World Securities badge. Matter of fact, there was an attendee who asked me about it; only, he had no recollection at all of SEARCH after I explained it to him. Within the Barbara Luna pic that is my wife Sharon. Don't tell her I've posted this. She will kill me. Barbara was wishing us well on our twelfth wedding anniversary. Motherboard failure & looming deadlines. Tenafly didn’t come until much later. The original Mystery Movie rota in the UK was Columbo, Banacek &, I think, Madigan being shown on a Tuesday night. The Snoop Sisters & Cool Million only appeared briefly obviously, cos they had so few episodes but that was a little later again. I can’t recall seeing ‘Tenafly’ in the 70s, although they showed the pilot last year. He was a tad unorthodox but nothing like John Shaft, just a black detective. Just think, if they played with the variations today, they’d be cross-matching the various traits into a single detective. We’d probably end up with a bald black scruffy detective who sucked on a lollipop with attitude. It's the ad which ran in TV Guide for the 9-24-80 showing of the Search pilot movie on SuperStation WTBS in Atlanta. They took the publicity photo of Lockwood as commando, made it into a silhouette, then put a maze around him. One of the more unusual ads I've seen for Search. It sounds like everyone had a great time. :-) Actually, there was a Search connection with one of the other guests you mentioned. Don Pedro Colley played Forbus, the hit man who eventually got Mattson (Terry Carter) in "The Mattson Papers." TV Tome's page on "Mattson Papers": http://tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-2901/epid- 211929 This is also good place for a reminder: Everyone who is going to a convention where SEARCH guests are scheduled, or are likely to show up, please get in touch with either Jim or Don H. so we can arrange to send you a tape or disc with that guest star's episode on it. Thanks again, and keep those convention reports coming in. :-) --Don 2821 From: "dghprobe3" Date: Fri Aug 27, 2004 2:05am Subject: Re: PILOT ad from WTBS dghprobe3 --- In probe_control, "Jim Alexander" wrote: > A WILD ad, Don! Hi Jim: What's funny is that I was leafing through a few old TV Guides looking for something else, and the maze part of the ad caught my eye. Looking closer, I realized it was an ad for ... It was there that I taped the SEARCH Pilot, the pilot for "Genesis II", and both its "sequels" (though the second is not an official sequel), the unrated "Spectre" pilot, and the pilot for "Questor Tapes". BTW, I don't know if she has gotten any farther with it, but I heard that Majel Roddenberry is working on doing a "Genesis II", and possibly a "Spectre" remake. of course, if she was able to get "Genesis II" off the ground, she would have to replace the "Dylan Hunt" character's name, since it was reintroduced in the "Andromeda" series. "Andromeda" was his re-envisioning of "Genesis II" before he died, as was "Earth: Final Conflict". -----Original Message----- From: Jim Alexander [mailto:probecontrol@...] Sent: Thursday, August 26, 2004 9:50 PM To: probe_control@yahoogroups.com Subject: [probe_control] PILOT ad from WTBS > A new item has been posted to Files.
