3412 From: "galacticprobe" Date: Thu Dec 1, 2005 3:58pm Subject: Scanner Power galacticprobe Greetings, All, I had a thought the other day; working with electronics for so long one doesn't stop to actually "think" of the basics anymore, it becomes just routine & one ignores it much like one ignores tying shoes (it happens almost on its own). Anyway, since the scanner is magnetic, assuming the magnet is at the back where it "attaches" to the ring, neck chain, etc., a coil of fine wire wrapping around the inside of the casing - such as one for its antenna - would be subjected to the magnet's lines of flux (technical term for magnetic field). Anyone familiar with basic electronics (or electricity) knows that a wire coil exposed to a megnetic field in just the right way has a voltage induced into the coil. While something on the scanner's scale wouldn't produce all that much power, it might provide enough for the scanner to "idle" on its own when it's not receiving power transmission from Probe Control. Those transmissions (in the form of radio waves) could feasibly provide the extra power needed for normal scanner operation as they also induce voltage in the antenna coil. (Like ordinary radio waves provide the power for crystal radio reception - no power source other than the radio signal yet the crystal receiver still works.) I'm not an engineer & even thinking about how it would all work together with the varying power levels Control sends out to operate the different scanner functions makes my brain hurt. But the theory seems somewhat realistic. Well, enough of my babbling for now. Here is my short review of each (if you don't want to know, stop reading now!): "SEARCH" -- a faithful novelization of the pilot! Mr. Weverka adds in some background detail to flesh out the story to a novel-length, but does not stray far from Leslie Stevens' original script. In fact, comparing the script and the novel, I found very few divergences. A well-written book that captures the story of the pilot episode and makes me want to watch the movie all over again. Five stars. "MOONROCK" -- I hope that, if you read this, you don't expect the same story you saw. I have a copy of the Moonrock script, and the novelization is nothing like it. Oh, the basic details are there -- the missing D-107, Dr. Trapnell, Abbas Mirzah, etc. But the way the story is told makes me wonder what version Mr. Weverka was working from, or if he even read the script at all. I was absolutely not prepared for Abbas Mirzah actually being one of the good guys! And the addition of various characters who don't appear in the script, the change of the action from the caves at the Ur excavations to a fictional Chaldea where Mirzah's father, the president, is on the verge of being overthrown, an evil deaf-mute the size of Andre the Giant ... what story this was I do not know, but it wasn't "Moonrock." The last lines of the episode, where Cameron hollers at Lockwood about living off food stamps after they deduct the cost of the chartered 747, aren't here either, since there IS no chartered 747. E-mail me if you want the details. All in all, I batted one-for-two with the books. Buy them if they become available -- you need them for your own collections -- but don't expect two faithful retellings. You'll just get one. I don't think it's that much, milliwatts? Or even my GPS, it recieves my signal then xmits it back to the GPS reciever, again, milliwatts? With that in mind, I wonder how much power it would really take to get a clear signal from a Scanner to a satellite. Oh Well, Just a thought. An interesting point except the scanner can be tracked without a magnet attached to it in several episodes. Hello Jack Re: Moonrock. I have a suspicion Weverka probably needed to flesh it out some to make the story work as a novel. I mean, how many pages can you have with Lockwood and Trapnell dancing on a 747?? Has anyone located Robert Weverka yet to see if he's still alive or not yet?? Gotta go Geoff 3420 From: "jack_bagley" Date: Mon Dec 5, 2005 1:59am Subject: Re: magnets, scanners & novelisations jack_bagley Geoff ... I'd be inclined to go along with that except for one big point -- the entire thrust of the story was changed. It may be that Mr. Weverka adapted the Moonrock script farther than anyone had foreseen or intended, but if you read the novel, you find very little of what went into the episode. My two cents... Jack 3421 From: "Geoff Willmetts" Date: Tue Dec 6, 2005 11:25pm Subject: Moonrock fragmentation gfwillmetts Hello Jack Weverka's done the range of novelisations, including just sorting out 'The Sting' purely as a screenplay in book format. Padding out the characters and adding a bit more depth to their motivation makes sense. The overall gist of the plot at the end was that the moonrock was fragmented wasn't lost. In the UK, a lot of novelisations consisted of 2 or 3 stories from the TV series. I can't speak for all US releases but that held true there was well, although novels based on the characters were more prevalent long before Trek came along. Look at UNCLE, I Spy and Mission: Impossible. If Weverka's brief was to work with only one story then he had to do something or he'd only have had a 40 page story on his hands.
