"PROBE" "OPERATION ICEMAN" Written by S. S. Schweitzer PROPERTY OF: WARNER BROS. TELEVISION 4000 Warner Boulevard FINAL DRAFT Burbank, California June 26, 1972 PROBE THREE "OPERATION ICEMAN" ACT ONE FADE IN: 1-5 OMITTED 5A INT. BRIEFING ROOM - ANGLE ON SCREEN - DAY Screen shows the exterior of a large city funeral home. A crowd of curiosity seekers has gathered outside, stares toward half a dozen pallbearers as they bring a mahogany casket down toward a waiting hearse. The pallbearers are dressed expensively. Their faces are as bleak and cold as the reputation of the Cosa Nostra. The widow leading the procession is, in spite of the veil covering her face, an obvious beauty. She is supported by a hard looking young hood wearing sunglassses. SLOW PULL BACK to REVEAL the screen oriented in room. 5B ANOTHER ANGLE Now a newsreel Cameraman, one of several present, pushes his way through the onlookers to record the proceedings at a closer vantage point. At this the hood escorting the widow, face errupting in fury, suddenly charges the Cameraman. The screen tilts wildly as though a struggle for the camera is taking place. CAMERON (V.O.) We don't have his real name but he's known in the streets as... BIANCO 'The Iceman.' CAMERON You know him. BIANCO Not personally. CAMERON Professionally? BIANCO Back when I was in the police business, he messed up a court case by doing his thing to my star witness. 3. 7 ANGLE FAVORING CAMERON CAMERON In the past four years he's 'done his thing,' as you call it, to no less than five underworld bosses. BIANCO That gives me less than a week to find the Iceman. CAMERON Ambassador Essex is due in New York September first for the Atlantic Commerce Negotiations. Bianco paces. BIANCO I'll need a team, Cameron. CAMERON He's protected by a bodyguard. BIANCO Three men. BURNSIDE All men? (CONTINUED) 6. 16 CONTINUED: CAMERON Bianco? We contacted his security people. BIANCO The best Probes we've got. Like David Pelham. CAMERON Pelham's only a month away from retirement. BIANCO Pelham saved me from a life of crime-fighting. He brought me into Probe and taught me all I know. I need someone with his experience. BURNSIDE What about my experience?! Thought I worked for an equal opportunity employer. CAMERON Bianco, I'M trying to tell you-- The security people want our help. But Essex has refused to let them hire Probe. BIANCO And I need some muscle. One of the black belts. Like Kim Ho. CAMERON Kim Ho's on a case in Hong Kong. BIANCO That's no excuse. BURNSIDE I'M a qualified Black Belt. Bianco's already moving toward the door. CAMERON We have to wait to see if the security people can make the Ambassador change his mind- (CONTINUED) 7. 16 CONTINUED: BIANCO By the time they do, he'll be dead. CAMERON We haven't finished the briefing 17 ANGLE ON BIANCO At the door, he turns back: BIANCO Brief Miss Burnside. We need all kinds of muscle. Exit. 18 ANGLE FAVORING BURNSIDE She is happy that he has hired her, stares after Bianco. Automatically Cameron turns to her: CAMERON 'Joseph Essex.' It's hard to believe that a borderline case could climb so high. He started out as a liquor baron but the laws changed, he paid his dues and married half of the social register. Now he's an Ambassador. BURNSIDE And he's made real contributions to our foreign policy. Cameron moves to Griffin, nods to him, turns to face screen. CAMERON Griffin. Start a new tape record. GINELLI, a security man in a business suit, fortyish, also impressive, sits next to him. EPSTEIN, an aide, youngish, in light jacket, works on position papers. ESSEX You've got security men on the roof, basement--practically under my bed. GINELLI Ambassador Essex, without you the Atlantic Commerce Negotiations will collapse. ESSEX We've twisted too many arms to let that happen. 22 EXT. DINING ROOM WINDOW - ANGLE ON GUARD - NIGHT. Shadowy figure appears, moves forward. Suspense score. EPSTEIN (V.O.) You're the only man tough enough to deal with the Foreign Missions-- The figure puts an elbow lock on the guard and drags him out of sight behind some bushes. 23 DINING ROOM - ANGLE ON ESSEX ESSEX Those negotiators need an old crocodile to keep them from stealing the whole swamp. 9. 24 HALLWAY A SECURITY MAN stands outside dining room. From darkness the shadowy figure materializes, karate chops the security man. Overheard is Ginelli talking. GINELLI (V.O.) I'm sorry. Our security agents picked up solid information that a contract is out to kill you. It's not a political assassination. It's one of the top hit-men--you're marked for an underworld murder and we feel that it's worth contracting the services of World Securities to try to stop him. 25 INT. - ROOM FROM WINDOW Essex faces the others. ESSEX You ought to know by now...if anyone is determined to kill someone else, no other person, no other organization can stop it. BIANCO (V.O.) You're absolutely right. 26 NEW ANGLE Others turn. ESSEX With all due respects, Bianco I don't think your World Securities could have done a better job protecting me. BIANCO That's not our job, Ambassador. My assignment is to get the Iceman before he gets you. EPSTEIN It's called preventive medicine. BIANCO The Iceman is a cold-blooded professional killer. They always assign me to the nicer gigs. ESSEX If I go along with you--I have one condition. BIANCO You're the client. ESSEX The newsmedia are always looking for chances to rake up my distant past. I can't afford bloodstains. BIANCO His..or mine? ESSEX Nobody's. 30 INT. - PROBE CONTROL - ANGLE FAVORING CAMERON Cameron speaks to headset. (CONTINUED) 11. 30 CONTINUED: CAMERON Speaking for management--all systems go. 31 INT. - ANGLE FAVORING ESSEX, BIANCO Bianco nods, turns to others. BIANCO We've got exactly six days. The room is tastefully appointed, comfortable modern chairs and chromey little tables in the center, couches along the walls, see-thru plastic world globes on pedestals and groovy in-flight renderings in the areas which need them. The room is not crowded...VIP'S are an uncommon lot. The Muzak dips from time to time for arrival and departure announcements. BIANCO What are you having for the main course? 39 INT. Gerard slides cigarette case across to Bianco. Bianco opens it. 51 INSERT - CLOSEUP - OPEN CIGARETTE CASE Inside cigarette case is a computer card with names. GERARD (V.O.) I think our best lead to the Iceman is General Lokarno. 16. 52 BACK TO SCENE GERARD Lokarno was the strong man in Malaysian politics until he got caught in black market operations. He was exiled and now lives in Almeria, Portugal. Beat, then: BIANCO Cameron--when we reach Paris, I'll want a connecting flight for Lisbon. CAMERON (V.O.) We've already booked you on Flight 603. BIANCO And we'll need briefing tapes on General Lokarno. GERARD No need for briefing tapes. I have the complete micro-file dossier on Lokarno in my attache case. Beat, then Pelham laughs, to Bianco: PELHAM He's a little ahead of you, Nick. Now you know how I felt twelve years ago when I was supposed to be teaching you. LOUDSPEAKER (O.S.) She looks from Pelham to Bianco, then: KALIA That applies to me, also. BIANCO I wouldn't worry too much, Miss Suluan. A woman of your talents-- you can take care of yourself. You always have. A thin smile. She looks down to Lokarno. He nods to her. Back to Bianco. KALIA How much for this microfile? BIANCO It's not for sale. But we might exchange it for...information.
